Overview

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but the fidelity with which Brooklyn's Afro-beat stars Antibalas approach the music created by Fela Kuti is almost monastic in its reverence. From their agitprop liner notes to the brawny, brass-led jams to the cover art -- rendered by Fela's own Ghariokwu Lemi -- these young disciples singlehandedly carry the torch for the late Black President on record and on the road. All those touring miles have paid off, though, as the group's musicianship makes a mighty leap on their second Ninjatune release. Talkatif hews closely to the path of its predecessor, Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1, downplaying some of the more overt Latin influences to settle steadily on a funk groove. The band is simply tighter than ever, achieving a head of steam to rival such chitlin'-circuit-tested ensembles as James Brown's J.B.s and Fela's own Africa 70 and Egypt 80 bands. As a multitude of latter-day jam bands will attest, there's a big difference between aspiring toward improvisatory groove nirvana and actually attaining it. This remarkably true studio document more than hints that Antibalas have made that step.

I'm no music critic, I just know what I like, and I REALLY like this. This group is so tight, and the music really smokes, you will not be able to sit still.
