School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Vibrantly colored, cut-paper collages of penguins, parrots, cats, raccoons, and other animals accompany limericks that will tickle the funny bones of young audiences. In some verses, children will recognize themselves (the hippo named Jean ``who refused to eat anything green''; the panda whose Grammie ``rocks her to sleep in her jammies''). Other selections describe incongruous characters and situations (the hot-air balloonist who ``flew over a sea of spaghetti''; Nellie, who ``painted her cottage with jelly''). Although these limericks lack the spice of the traditional adult form, they offer wordplay and rhythm to catch readers' attention and may inspire them to write a few of their own. The brightness and scale of the illustrations make the book suitable for group sharing. Edward Lear's Daffy Down Dillies (Caroline, 1992), John Ciardi's The Hopeful Trout & Other Limericks (Houghton, 1989), and Myra Cohn Livingston's Lots of Limericks (McElderry, 1991) are all for older readers.-Meg Stackpole, Rye Free Reading Room, NY
