Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This guide to preventive care and to the appropriate use of the healthcare system is in tune with today's twin health concerns of healthcare reform and health promotion. In 14 chapters, physician specialists describe the causes, symptoms, treatments, and preventive measures for AIDS, cancer, diabetes, sports injuries, pregnancy, allergies, sleep regulation, and cardiovascular, voice, eye, skin, and children's disorders. A registered dietician thoroughly details the role of nutrition in maintaining good health. A final chapter provides criteria for selecting healthcare providers, hospitals, and insurance. McDonough, a family practitioner and host of a syndicated radio program, concludes each chapter with answers to questions frequently asked on his talk show. Talking Health covers fewer topics than encyclopedic works and offers less detail than "coping with" books. However, the information provided is current, with citations of 1993 statistics and studies. While not an essential purchase, this book is a useful addition to collections that require the latest information on common health problems in an easily understood format.-Mary Prottsman, Medical Lib., Enterprise, Ala.
