Overview

There are lots of books about communication skills. Most tell you what to do—in abstract phrases and broad generalizations. This book tells you how to do it—in simple, practical terms.

Here are 92 specific techniques—tricks, if you will. Each is briefly explained, set off in a box for easy reference, and accompanied by an anecdote or example clearly showing you how it works in the real world, and how you can make it work for you.

These "little tricks for big success" are divided into nine categories covering all aspects of every social situation, including

  • entering the room
  • beginning the conversation
  • being an insider in every group
  • working the crowd like a popular politician
  • finding something in common with anyone, anywhere
  • talking on the phone (it's not the same as talking in person!)

Whether you're at a party, a business meeting, or a romantic dinner for two, these communication tools will help you talk to the stranger you want to meet, impress the executive you want to work for, or turn the new friend into the love of your life.

The next time it matters, try this: "Rubberneck the Room." Stars learn how to make "The Entrance." You can, too. When you arrive at a gathering, don't slink into the room unnoticed. Stand in the doorway and survey the scene. Look around slowly, not to show off, but to learn about the world you're walking into, and plan your next move.

Or this: "Be Prosaic with Passion." Don't worry about your opening line. First impressions have less to do with the words you say, than with how you say them. An empathetic mood, positive demeanor, and passionate delivery make you sound exciting—even if the words are prosaic.

Or this: "Limit the Fidget." If the conversation counts, let the nose itch, the ear tingle, the foot prickle. Don't fidget, twitch, wiggle, squirm, or scratch. And above all, keep your hands away from your face. Fidgeting and covering your face can give your listener the idea that you're lying.

Or this: "Trash the Teasing." A guest about to make the toast spills a few drops, and you chuckle to the person next to you, "He's feeling no pain." Never, ever do it! An innocent joke at someone else's expense labels you a loser. It may get you a cheap laugh, but the Big Winners will have the last one.

Inside this book, you'll find 88 more skills you can learn—and use—today. Talking the Winner's Way will teach the techniques to master any social situation with confidence and poise, like a born winner.
