Meet the Author

James Van Praagh, author of the New York Times bestseller Talking To Heaven (Dutton), took the publishing world by storm in early 1998. His appearances on 48 Hours, Sally Jesse Raphael, and especially, Larry King Live sent his book skyrocketing to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. After an initial printing of 10,000 copies, Talking To Heaven ultimately sold close to 600,000 copies in hardcover. Van Praagh's gift for communication with the dead clearly touched a chord in the American psyche, and has earned him a devoted following.

James Van Praagh's Reaching to Heaven: A Spiritual Journey Through Life and Death takes his uplifting and transcendent message one step further, showing how counsel from the spirit realm can help us reconnect to our souls-the quintessence of who we are-and tracking what happens to the soul during life, death, and rebirth. February 1999 will also see the publication of the mass market paperback edition of Talking to Heaven by Signet.

James Van Praagh has two gifts: clairvoyance and clairsentinence. Clairvoyance is the ability to "see clearly," meaning that he can see the dead around us. Clairsentinence means "clear feeling," and results in his "feeling the emotions and personalities of the deceased." These abilities have made him into a nationally recognized medium, who travels the country giving workshops and teaching classes in spiritual and psychic development. He has appeared on Larry King Live, Good Morning American, Sally Jesse Raphael and many other national television programs, and has had national print coverage from, among others, People, Life, and Newsweek. James Van Praagh was born in Bayside, New York, and is the youngest of four children.

Although he was raised a Roman Catholic and even entered a seminary at fourteen, he soon found that "spirituality" was more compelling than "religion." He graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in broadcasting and communication, then moved to Los Angeles, where at age 24 he met a medium, who told him that within two years, he himself would become clairvoyant. Van Praagh's psychic sensitivity increased, and he began to receive messages form the beyond.

James Van Praagh now travels throughout the country giving lecturing, giving demonstrations, and spreading the knowledge of life after death. In addition he conducts specialized tours of spiritual centers around the world, including Brazil, Egypt, and Mexico.

Because my husband died in my arms and "came back to chat" (the subject of my own book, "Love From Both Sides"), I felt alone and completely insane. That is, until my next-door neighbor's ex-boyfriend, who was producing a new show called "Ghost Whisperer," and knew James Van Praagh and his amazing work, suggested I buy his book. And so I did. And because James's book is well written and clean, it made my own mourning process easier. And it helped me to accept what was happening to me, and that was important, became it made it more believable. I didn't just dismiss it as my own crazy brain acting up, or going haywire. So, if you're reading these words, you're probably reading them because perhaps someone has died, or you've had a similar experience. If that's the case, then maybe you were meant to read them and act on them. Good luck with your own journey... we're in this together, yes?

This book has taken me through some very difficult times - it truly helped me when my father passed away 13 years ago. And now my mother has passed away and I will be pulling it out again. I have given this book to other people to help with their grief. Unfortunately, I gave them my hardcover copy, and did not get it back,so I have to reorder a paperback copy. I offer this to anyone who has lost someone, it is written well, and helps guide us through the grief. I would recommend this highly.

At one time or another we lose someone very special. This book gives me the comfort in knowing that my soul mate is not dead...just waiting for me to rejoin her. Talking to Heaven is a comforting bridge to understanding my fears.

Talking To Heaven is one of the books that started it all. It came before John Edward¿s best selling One Last Time and in fact may have inspired John Edward to write his book. James Van Praagh is a talented medium and psychic. Cher in particular really connected via his talents. This book is different than Crossing Over in that James Van Praagh challenges the church and its fear and guilt based objectives. However, the message is the same. We live on. We survive physical death. There is more. And, we will meet our loved ones again, and again. I work with professional mediums. My name TrChannel is short for Trance Channel. James is the real deal and well worth reading. Metaphysics is more than just life after death of course. James Van Praagh knows this and conveys this in his book Talking to Heaven. A highly recommended read!

I read Jame's book in the fall of 1997 after my mother's sudden passing. The book truly helped me in dealing with my overwhelming grief and gave me insight as I had never known before. I have since passed the book on to many who were experiencing unthinkable loss. Thank you James!

I really enjoyed this book. the author really talks TO you and tells you his stories. I admit I cried many times in reading this book because the stories of the families and encounters with their lost loved ones really makes you feel that someone you may have lost is right there with you while you are reading. It is a great pleasure to read about the people that James has helped throughout the years.

This book has brought me so much comfort after losing my sister. I have always been a skeptic and probably is still one deep down even after reading this book but Van Praagh's perspective is extremely convincing and the skeptic in me is really having a difficult time holding on to no beliefs at all.

Eric Flores 4-2-07 Per.4 Col.C Talking To Heaven Want a book that can give you another view of the deceased? Then Talking to Heaven is your kind of book. It has suspense, mystery, and will question your mind on what will happen when you pass away. In one of the installments on the deceased series. This book proves that James Van Praagh is a master of the deceased story. Talking to Heaven shows the reader that you can still live evan after you die. It really tests the mind of the reader and makes them think about if you can really live after you die. One of the characters is a boy, the writer doesn¿t really say the boys name. The writer describes him as a boy who is interested in the after-life. He has a little group of friends and the writer says some of them. Their names are John, Scott, Kathy, and that¿s it. Other characters are some of the teachers that work at the Catholic school where they go. The setting is in a town, I think it¿s in Nevada but I¿m not that sure. I think the setting is really important t the story because it has the perfect effect on it, like dust going around. The writer mentions that its kind of a quiet city and nothing cool ever happens there. The major conflict is that the little boy is going around investigating on a family that past away. The little boy evan goes inside the house of the family, but they also investigate other past away people as well. I won¿t give away the ending of the story, so you¿re just going to have to read it. The writer has a very good writing style. He gives a lot of foreshadowing, flashbacks, and conversations that make you want to be in the story. He likes to tell the story as if it were a mystery, boy its not. Evan if the story is non-fiction he makes it as if it were real. The meaning of the book is to just believe that there is still life after death. James does a wonderful job on that. Most of his books have the same meaning, like most but nor all have to deal with the after-life. The point of view of this book is 1st person point of view. I think that was the best choice for this kind of book. I also think that if it would have been in 3rd person it would also be good for this book because you can get all the peoples thoughts and not just the main character. The last book I have read by my favorite sport author was much more feeling and energy into what was going to happen if I didn¿t win kind of thing, so I was disappointed about that. After all that my final recommendation is a thumbs up because it really get you thinking about the after-life like I have said. So if your ever interested in that stuff get Talking to Heaven by James Van Praagh.

In this book, James Van Praagh convinces the reader that life on the Other Side exists, and people live forever. Since I, too, have had these experiences, knowing that we can communicate with our loved ones even after they have passed over is a comforting feeling because we know that we'll be together again with those we love. And in the meantime, we don't have to wait to talk to any of them. James tells about different people on earth who come to him and want them to contact another. Thus, he is quite successful at what he does. Even though communication with the other side is possible for all of us, James has a special ability to get details of images, spirits, and messages that should convince anyone that life is eternal. After all, John 3:16 in the Bible assures us that God gave His only son and for those who believe in Him, life is eternal. But the question in everyone's one's mind is what about the others? James gives answers and assurance to us that life exists for them, too. This book is a must read. And for the nonbeliever, there is an entire community of Spiritualists in Cassadaga, Florida, who can help you talk to a loved one if you desire because James is very busy with those people who do believe in his ability.

After losing a family member a few months ago in an accident, I started watching his show, Beyond. I was hooked from the beginning. Reading this book helped me to understand and answered questions that we all have of life after death. It was very comforting to know that our loved ones are still around, just spiritually.

28 January 2003 Having just completed reading this book (through lots of tears)I feel at last some kind of peace within myself. During the last three years I have lost my father and just recently a beloved pet. I am so relieved to know that there is an afterlife for pets as well as humans. The fact that the "Christ light" is referred to is an upliftment and a comforter. God bless and thank you.

This book scratches your curiosity about the afterlife and what happens to folk when they die. I wish he would have explained more about his powers and how he came to have them, and been more detailed about life after death and how it all works. It didnt' satiate my curiousity, it did however sooth the itch. I enjoyed it.

'Talking to Heaven' is a book I highly recommend. James Van Praagh has given us a guide on how to live life after a loss of a loved one or an important part of our lives. Even if your haven't lost anyone close to you, this book teaches how to love the worlds, your friends and yourself. You dont have to be religious to read this book. It is simply an eye opener to a different world. A world I believe we all will go to oneday.

Talking to Heaven is such a wonderful book to read. After the death of my mother, my sister offered this book for me to read. At first I was reluctant to read it because I did not want to waste my time reading something that was a potential hoax. But after reading it, I was so captivated by the healing effect it had on me. I felt more at ease with my mother's death and I was able to cope better with it. It is such an uplifting breath of fresh air. I would recommend it to anyone who has ever grieved over the death of a loved one. Even if you have never lost someone close to you, I would recommend this book because it talks about the spiritual community.

This book is a must read! James Van Praagh has demonsrated the need of all human beings, the heartfelt understanding of life, death and beyond. A very spiritual and healing book for all to read who has either lost someone or wants to cherish the future. This book has helped me a great deal in coping with my adoption and losing my immediate family due to terrible child abuse. The lonliness I feel inside has calmed my waters by understanding the spirituality of life, and that whatever we went through had a meaning. God Bless!

James Van Praagh puts death into perspective. The book was recommended to me a week after my 45 year old husband passed away after a long illness. I know now why he was here and that I will be reunited with him. Great comfort. I am anxiously awaiting the release of Grief.
