Gr 7-10 Devoted fans will leap on Hinton's new novel, yet her protagonist Travis is no Tex (Delacorte, 1979). On the surface, this 15 year old resembles the classic misfits from the author's previous books; however, Travis lacks Tex' zest for living. Released from juvenile hall to cool down at his uncle's Oklahoma horse ranch, he acts the role of sensitive punkhe looks like a rebel and flies into violent rages, yet he seeks to publish his novel and he loves his cat. He wants to be left alone, but he suffers from being ignored by the ``hicks'' at school. The high point of his introspective retreat is his attraction to Casey, the riding instructor who leases his uncle's barn. The scenes of stable chores, riding lessons, and horse shows may interest some readers, while the equestrian jargon will mean nothing to the book's primary audience. Hinton uses a horse, Star Runner, as a counterpart to Travis to illustrate her theme of life's quirks: some win, some don't. Without making much of an effort, Travis ends up a winneralive, free from jail, and a published author. Hinton builds a sparse plot around a predominately bleak theme. Although the story isn't fleshed out, tough-guy Travis will appeal to a certain readership. Others will find him forgettable, especially compared to his fictional predecessors.     Summary

    Travis is a tough teenager who lived in a large city. Travis likes to write a lot and he actually wrote a book. Some of his writings were put in the fireplace by his stepfather and then Travis assaults him. After that he was sent to live with his uncle named Ken. When he meets Ken they go out to eat pizza and then they see a girl at the restaurant. The girl was named Casey. She runs a riding school for kids who ride horses. Later Travis works for Casey at the ranch and then u gets an offer to get his book published. He goes out to celebrate and when he gets drunk he gets beat up because a worker found out his real age. When he gets kicked out and is hurt real bad he calls his uncle to pick him up. Then he told his uncle he did this because he is getting his book published. His stepfather won't approve that he can get it published so it got Travis mad so he rips the phone out of the wall and throws it. He almost hits Ken's wife, Teresa, and almost his son, Christopher. Ken then helps Travis after they worked things out. Ken and Travis meet the publisher Ms. Carmichael who comes to town, and even arranges some publicity with a TV interview at a station owned by a friend of his.When they return to Ken's ranch a huge lightning storm strikes and Ken and Travis help Casey get the horses to safety but then the horse called the star runner is killed when hit. After the incident they recover from a hearing loss and live regularly.

    Review of Taming the Star Runner

    Travis is made to go live with his uncle on a horse farm. He attempted to kill or injure his stepfather. This book is a different kind of story that can break your heart or warm it. Travis is a teenager who may do some bad things, but he has complex thoughts. They lead him to publish his book. Taming the Star Runner does achieve its goal. It serves a purpose for a very good fiction novel. This book helps readers understand someone who is not like them. Taming the Star Runner is for teenage and young adult audiences. This book is short, so you will defiantly want to read more. Everyone should read this book at least once in their life. Coming from a different point of view, it will help you understand a diverse kind of person. S.E. Hinton has outdone herself again.

    A Good Book.

    If you like reading about life and hope then this is the book to read. The book is in third person, which is different from her other works. It is placed in the later days when more people were doing drugs and kids were drinking. There is a troubled 16 year old, Travis, that is popular and a cool kid at his old school. Things change when the city boy moves out on a ranch in Texas with his uncle, Ken. He doesn't fit in with all the hicks at his new school, he is a loner. He left his friends, and his family behind. He is always getting into trouble. He starts to help out with Casey at the stables, a girl at his school who also is leasing the barn, that is when he meets the star runner. The enormous horse is crazed yet magestic, that nobody dares to ride. travis said that Casey is the bravest person he ever met. When she is hurt she'll keep on going and to take the chance to tame the star runner, she is just about as crazy as the horse. He later finds out he is in love. Travis is a very good writer, even though it might be hard to imagine that from his tough personality. Even though he is young, he is determined to get his book published, so he sends it off to a publishing company. He keeps to himself sometimes and wants to get out, but is not sure how. He expresses his thoughts through writing. He uses mild language throughout the book, and it seems to fit his character fairly well. this would be a teen novel, as younger kids would have problems understanding. I don't know much about horses, but I understood. The book has horses, tragedies, and a little bit of romance in it. This is a good book that I would advice to my friends and older readers. I would read this book over and over, and it didn't take that long to finsih. It is hard to put down when things get going, Hinton continues to surprise me.

    Taming the Star Runner

    Taming the star runner by S.E Hinton is a amazing book. What pulls all your attention into the story is in every chapter there is a situation being faced and you would never want to put it down. Travis, the main character in the story go lives with his uncle ken after a confrontation in Oklahoma with his step dad. Travis a cool guy with a punk attitude is the weird kid at his new school. He wants to be left alone, but suffers from being ignored by the ``hicks'' at school. One day Travis goes out to his uncles ranch which is being leased by the horse riding instructor Casey who he ends up falling for later in the story. Although no one knows it Travis is a writer. He has written a book and even sent it to a publishing office.


    Although this is a great book I would change a few things about the novel. First off S.E Hinton is a first person point of view writer so it was kind of confusing when she writes 2nd person perspective. Second I would have made Travis a little bit tougher around women and not shy. In the story he's represented as the cool guy who doesn't take anything from anyone but his shyness doesn't prove that. Third I would have gave his mom a more of a role in the story, he just gets sent of to Texas and you hear from her only 3 times throughout the story. I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading books about life changes and faith.

    Great book to read.

    Taming the star runner by S.E. Hinton is a terrific book! I enjoyed reading this book because it leaves you guessing and wanting more. Taming the star runner has many different situations throughout the book and it is very easy to comprehend. This book is so good because it leaves you wanting to know what happens next and guessing to find out. Every chapter of this book has different situations that make you want to seek for more information. The main character of this book, Travis, goes through good and bad times but mainly after he moves out to his uncle kens in the country better things start occurring in his life. Travis meets a trainer named Casey that works at his uncle¿s farm. Travis and Casey grow a strong relationship and bond between one another. At first Casey and Travis both disliked each other but Casey has helped Travis learn and expand beyond limits. Travis was a natural gifted writer and loved writing stories. Travis wrote a book based on his personal life and it got published. When trouble occurs later in the story Casey was there to help. Time went on Travis and Casey learned that they¿re relationship is better being friends. This book was very well written and was very enjoyable to read.

    Good, But Not 'Outsiders' Good

    I was really excited to start this book, becuase I had read almost all of S.E. Hinton's classics before this. I still thought that it was a magnificently writen book, but the charectors weren't as lovable as they were in some other stories. The ending was also kinda confusing, and suprisingly, the star runner was not mentioned alot in the book. But, this book is still a great read and well worth your time.

    great Read

    I personally like the books where S.E Hinton talks about troubled children, like The Outsiders and That was then, this is Now, better than Taming the Star Runner, but it was still a great read. I recommend it to everyone.

    So-So

    The only one of the SE Hinton books that wasn't exceptional. Well, I guess it's hard to top her former classics: The Outsiders Tex That was Then, this Is Now Rumble Fish to Taming the Star Runner. Taming the Star Runner was good, but not amazing. The thing I would change is her narrative, she is a first person and should stick that way, her second person is very confusing. I still give all Hitnon books ten stars each! S.E. Hinton is still the best author!

    Confusing

    While this book is a very good book, I think that what the annotation says it is about isn't the main subject. I was looking forward to a horsey book. The main character never rides except once and you only get a flashback of that. If you are looking for a horsey book like I was...look somewhere else. The book does little for the horsey people like me.

    SWEET!!!

    This is the coolest book i have ever read. It contains extreamely well details. I love Hintons books. ESpecially The outsiders!!! S.E hinton is a great author for everybody.

    I really liked the book and i could relate to a lot of it. There is a little swearing and some situations are mis leading. But if you read it you will most likely, like it!!!

    awsome!!!!

    this the best book!! i love it! it makes u feel like ur in the book watching it! i love all of S.E.Hinton's books! I ended up loving all of hintons charctures in her books! she inpired me to write a books about greasers and confused boys! when i read her books i feel like i own them!

    S.E. Hinton really outdid herself.

    Taming the Star Runner was a great book. It showed that not everyone can be perfect, but eveyone should be themselves.

    Must Read

    Taming the Star Runner is definatly one of my favorite S. E. Hinton books. Travis was a very easy character to relate to for me because of his writing. Overall this book was both exciting and thought provking at the same time. It is a must read.

    Great book

    This book is very good. The only reason I gave it a 4 was because Hinton wrote it in the third person which I didn't like too much. But over all this book is awsome. It has such a great feel to it. S.E. Hinton wrote another classic that I'll read over again and again.

    Awsome Book!

    This is an awsome book! i'm 13yrs and it looked intresting to me because it had something to do with horses so i read it! it was great! it has a little of everything in it! I recemmend it!

    another hit

    S.E. Hinton does it again!!!! 'Taming the Star Runner' is one of the best novels that I have read...and I've read alot. Hinton as always creates a character that you can bond with and share his feelings as you read the novel. Bravo for Hinton, she is one of the best young adult novelists and this one justs helps her keep her rep.!!!
