Editorial Reviews

CM Magazine
"A finely crafted story, one in which readers, along with Trevor, will overcome obstacles to find that truth and justice prevail. The novel’s a page turner, and I highly recommended to both school and public libraries for their teen collections."
Lower Columbia Review Group WLMA
"A story about friendship and team work...This was a very fast read but still had enjoyable characters and story line."
Library Media Connection
"A quick whodunit for reluctant readers. Chapters are short and direct. There is enough action in the book to keep kids reading. The characters are believable and realistic, as is the plot...A good hi/lo choice for the older middle school age group."
VOYA - Lauri J. Vaughan
Designed for low-ability middle school readers, the titles in the Orca Currents collection also work just fine for high school students with reading abilities ranging from 2 to 4.5. Tampered and Caught in the Act both feature teens embroiled in nonviolent criminal activity for which they, or a friend, are falsely accused. Solving their respective mysteries is the central conflict in each. In Tampered, Trevor's new job at the local supermarket is threatened when incidents of food tampering start piling up. Trevor's prankster friend, Alex, and Mattie, a recently fired employee, are likely suspects. The novel suffers from some confusing dialogue, and shedding an extraneous character would have served to strengthen the central story. Caught in the Act features Dylan, who is accused of robbing several vacation cottages. In both stories, teens are judged by others largely because they were previously involved in criminal activity. The plot lines roll along quickly and contain enough realistic but extenuating circumstances to make them plausible and enjoyable. The consistency of length and complexity, the availability of online teacher guides associated with all Orca titles, and the growing size and diversity of the Orca Currents (as well as Orca Soundings, which is targeted at slightly older teens) make these books superior choices for classroom collections serving teens with low reading skills. Librarians paying attention will create lists of read-alikes that could ramp up readers to more sophisticated titles. (Orca Currents) Reviewer: Lauri J. Vaughan
