Mary Adams needs to pay her deceased husband's gambling debts, and Alex's offer of marriage seems to be the answer to her prayers. But on the day of their marriage, Mary begins to have strange hallucinations-memories of another woman's life. A life that had taken place centuries before and somehow seems frighteningly familiar.
Before Mary can figure out why she's hallucinating, it becomes clear that someone in Alex's house is out to destroy her. Could it be one of Alex's sinister servants, or could it be Alex himself? Until she can learn the answer, Mary knows she must keep her distance from Alex, but he's reawakening a hidden desire-a deep longing-that she can't ignore. But will following her heart lead her to eternal love or to a nightmare that will never end?
The only way to discover the truth is to unravel centuries of...Tangled Memories.
As Alex pulled his giant black horse upward, the animal threatened the air with his heavily shod hooves. Thwarted, I reined Lady to the right only to meet again my black-clad tormentor and his warlike horse. Whichever way I turned, he blocked my way. I screamed with frustration and fright. I wouldn't let this man get the best of me. When I pivoted again to the left, the black horse was a jump ahead of me. Again the animal reared. My brave mare shuddered beneath my legs.
"I hate you Alexander Dominican!" I shrieked through tears.
Alex's horse turned in an agitated circle. "No you don't."
"Yes, I do! This marriage is damned! I want to get away from you." I started forward once more.
Slowly, like the view from a slow motion camera, the black gelding reared again. Just as slowly, Alex toppled off. Already unbalanced, the horse fell on his side amid a wild thrashing of hooves. In seconds, the black animal regained his feet, yet Alex remained silent and still on the ground. Lady stood immobile beneath me. My palms were wet inside my gloves.
Dizzy waves washed through me. Like so many other things, this had happened to me sometime in the past. Not in this particular way, not in this same manner, but it had happened. My heart trembled with remembering. My body ached with a longing and an anxiety retained from some previous time. Some unfathomable force pulled me toward Alex in a way I couldn't control. I fought it. A fierce battle raged within my mind and spirit. I convulsed with it. I opposed the certainty growing strongly within my being that I could not leave without knowing if my husband was alive or dead. After all, he was my reason for existence.

Mary Adams was a widow for only a short time when she married Dr. Alexander Dominican so she could act as a mother to his child. His wife died recently as well from cancer but before her death they saved the child¿s life by doing a cesarean section. In return for marrying Alex, he would pay off the fifty thousand in debts her late husband left behind when he died.
Mary moves into Marchbrook Manor, a medieval house in the heart of Kentucky. Once she steps through the door, strange things begin happening to her. She has visions of a medieval woman and her husband, a great lord in England of 1327. In addition to her visions someone in the house is trying to drive Mary away by playing cruel and malicious tricks on her. When she tells Alex about the incidents he doesn¿t believe her, which hurts Mary a great deal because she has come to love him.
TANGLED MEMORIES is a wonderful gothic romance complete with a foreboding castle, a helpful housekeeper, strange visions, and an insane antagonist. Told in the first person from Mary¿s point of view, readers feel the same fears that the heroine experiences. Jan Scarbrough has written a modern day gothic that will delight fans of this growing sub genre.
Harriet KlausnerWas this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
