A maiden who will not marry

For the lovely Lady Audris, taking a husband would mean losing her home. She is content to concentrate on her special gift, weaving gorgeous tapestries that often contain hints of the future. But nothing predicts the arrival of Hugh Licorne, confident in his strength and single-minded in his determination-to have her.

A battle-hardened knight who needs a bride

From the moment Hugh sets eyes on Lady Audris, he knows he has found the woman destined to be his wife. She's courageous and beautiful, delicate yet strong. But winning her trust and defending her from her enemies will be the greatest battle he has ever faced.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Putting an interesting spin on the war-torn historical romance, this novel takes the revolutionary step of refusing to choose sides. Caught in the 12th-century English succession war between the Empress Matilda and King Stephen, Lady Audris and her family don't actually care who wins. They simply want to protect the city of Wark and their subjects from the messy civil war. Similarly, Audris is entirely sympathetic to her uncle's desire to keep control of her land; rather than branding him as a selfish tyrant, she resolves not to marry rather than dispossess him. Despite this vow, Audris is immediately attracted to dashing suitor Hugh Licorne, but the two are divided by issues of illegitimacy, family loyalty, and wartime expediency. A set of prophetic tapestries and Hugh's mysterious origins contribute to an enjoyably rich story crammed full of plot. This epic is perfect for readers who like an extra dose of history in their romance. (May)

    more from this reviewer

This is a reprint of a great Roberta Gellis' 1980s medieval romance

In the twelfth century an orphaned heiress Audris is able to weave visionary tapestries. Her honorable Uncle Oliver raises her as if she was his child not out of affection, but because he is a hard yet just person doing the right thing by his niece.

His noble mother died birthing Hugh Licorne while his father is unknown. Arch Bishop Thurstan raised Hugh, who has become a knight pledged to King Stephen of Blois.

When Audris' half-brother Bruno introduces his sister to his friend Hugh, they are attracted to one another. They pledge loyalty to each other though he believes he is unworthy of her unless he can rise higher up the feudal hierarchy. Hugh and Audis begin a quest to learn who sired him in hopes that will raise him to a level equal of that of his beloved heiress.

This is a reprint of a great Roberta Gellis' 1980s medieval romance. The character driven story line is fast-paced yet contains the trademark vivid detail that makes armchair readers feel they are in the middle of an English civil war between the Empress Matilda and King Stephen. Medieval romance readers will relish A Tapestry of Dreams as the heroine and her family remains sort of neutral in the conflict only wanting to protect their city and land.

    Great book! Favorite Author

I've read this book many time. Love the way Roberta Gellis captures the Middle Ages while presenting a valid historical picture of the period. Love all her books, especially the "Roseland Series".

    Classic Gellis

This has all the elements of a Roberta Gellis historical: set during the reign of King Stephen, the early Norman period she seems most at home in, an honorable hero, a heroine who knows what's possible in her world, and a mixture of actual historic and fictual characters where the history of a time period impacts the plot and characters.

    Wonderful reading! Highly recommend!

Once again, Roberta Gellis has shown her deep knowledge of history - as well as the brilliantly constructed romance which is the storyline of this book. Roberta's writing talents make even fierce battles interesting. She excels in well-laid-out plotlines, deep characters, interesting history, secondary plots and characters - all are well-rounded and complete. She is a master at giving you the information you need at the moment, and keeping you hooked to read more.

I enjoyed this book as I have so many of her other books, and look forward to many more!

    Okay for an older book

A long story and maybe a little too much with the history of the times it was for......but you'll like it.
