Overview

Kirsten Glasbrook's beautiful designs, with their brilliant color ranges and evocative images, are combined with easy-to-follow instructions and detailed step-by-step photographs to create this inspiring guide. The tapestries the author makes are strong and durable and they look wonderful on walls - adding both color and a feeling of warmth and comfort. Miniature designs are worked using very fine yarns, or they can be worked on a huge scale with thick bundles of mixed fibres. The basic techniques are similar and all you need is a frame or a very simple loom. This book contains everything you need to know about the materials you need to get started, how to start and how to create wonderful patterns, landscapes and images. The author uses her stunning work to illustrate the techniques and a series of projects teach how to build up confidence and skills. This colorful, exciting book offers a rich source of stimulating and innovative ideas that will appeal to all abilities.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The brilliant color in this book seems to jump right off the page. Glasbrook is a tapestry weaver who exhibits widely and teaches from her studio in Devon, England. While not as detailed as Nancy Harvey's classic Tapestry Weaving: A Comprehensive Study Guide, this introduction to tapestry weaving is an excellent starting point for the beginner, as well as a source of inspiration for the experienced tapestry artist. Using a simple frame loom, she teaches all the basic techniques, illustrating each with small learning projects. A gallery of the author's own works adds to the inspirational value of the book, while the section on mounting and framing tapestries will interest tapestry weavers on all levels. Generally recommended for academic and public library textile collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Kirsten Glasbrook trained as a weaver in Denmark where she was born. After moving to London in the 1960's she spent time restoring antique tapestries. She taught part time at the Bath Academy of Art for many years, and now lives and works in Devon, running workshops and classes for adults and children. Her commissions have included work for the Forestry Commission and numerous private collectors in the UK and other countries. Using mainly wool, linen and cotton, she designs and weaves tapestries, often with a mythological, mystical or meditative theme. The weaving techniques are simple and traditional and the brilliant color ranges, and diversity of texture in the different yarns, are a constant challenge and excitement.
