Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Beware! By the turn of the first page, one may have already come down with a serious illness. If not, one will at least be itching by the final page! A part of the "Yucky Science" series, this book informs its readers about some of the world's worst diseases and spares no expense when it comes to the "yucky" details. From the historical fears of leprosy and the bubonic plague to the modern fears of lice and mad cow disease, this chapter book does not leave much out. Not only does the book include how the diseases start but also how some of them can be treated. Every chapter includes "Yikes!" captions that tell a startling fact about the topic being discussed, such as how mites live all over a human's body. Many children will find this book very interesting; however, for a child who is already very concerned about catching a disease, this book may only serve to make the individual more paranoid. The cartoon illustrations do help to lighten the weighty, more somber tone of the seriousness of some of these diseases making the information more palatable for its younger audience. Though the real life photos included do serve to balance the cartoon humor and lend a more scientific air to the text. Overall, this book is a great educational resource for elementary teachers with its fun approach to science. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
