Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mary E. Vander Heiden, MA, ATC, LAT (University of Central Florida)
Description: This beginners' guide to the fundamentals of taping and wrapping techniques in athletics targets individuals with no medical background or experience who may be in a position where they have to assist with taping and wrapping for sports and/or protection.
Purpose: The purpose is to familiarize readers with basic taping and wrapping techniques that are common in sports. The author includes descriptions and pictures of basic anatomy in the instructions to further explain why the taping or wrapping technique is necessary and beneficial to the athlete. The book is effective in the way it addresses complicated techniques in a step-by-step fashion, using layman's terms, to serve readers who have no access to a certified athletic trainer. The target audience will be able to read, comprehend, and then perform the taping and wrapping techniques demonstrated in the book.
Audience: Individuals with no formal training in sports medicine/athletic training are the intended audience. At best, the book also may be used for observation students who are looking for a basic understanding of taping and wrapping techniques while working toward acceptance into an accredited athletic training program. The author is a certified athletic trainer.
Features: The manner in which the book is written, including anatomical pictures, step-by-step instructions, and informative sidebars, make it uniquely suitable for readers who have no previous experience with sports medicine and athletic training. The anatomical pictures are particularly useful because they give a visual and detailed explanation of the body part to be taped or wrapped, as well as the benefits of the procedure for the athlete. A DVD that accompanies the book demonstrates techniques to reinforce the written descriptions. The activities are easily identified in the book by a DVD disc symbol with a written description of the activity. The only noted inconsistency is the pricing for materials. The book includes pricing details for some items, while omitting them for others.
Assessment: This book will be helpful to readers who are inexperienced or unfamiliar with the sports medicine field. It reaches the target audience well, and the visual information is beneficial.
