Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This book is part of the Tarascon Clinical Review Series, which like the Tarascon Pharmacopoeia titles, provides references for house officers.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide a concise reference on the major considerations confronting interns, residents, and attending hospitalists on call in the inpatient setting.
Audience: Although aimed primarily at residents and hospitalists who work in the inpatient setting, the book does offer outpatient clinicians additional insight into what is involved when admitting a patient to a hospital and the questions that arise about what occurs after admission.
Features: The book is divided in the usual organ system manner. The information is presented in a bulleted format with numerous tables and figures to make it readily accessible. The font is necessarily small (also similar to Pharmacopoeia), but not difficult to work with. The references are up to date and focus on the most recent changes. Each chapter has sections on pathophysiology, etiology, clinical presentation, workup, differential diagnosis, and treatment, and the language is concise.
Assessment: This is an extraordinarily practical book. While there have been a number of these types of books published by various residency programs, they have tended, like medicine itself, to add information and grow proportionally. This first edition takes a fresh look and refines the bank of knowledge to the central core, keeping the book small enough to be easily carried. I highly recommend this to house staff, in addition to the books published by their individual residency programs, for a broader perspective of medicine.
