Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Danna Lane Bell, ADN(Washington Regional Medical Center)
Description: This quick reference book for emergency department practitioners is filled with multiple resources that are easy to find and use.
Purpose: It is intended as a pocket-sized quick reference for use in the emergency department.
Audience: Emergency medicine practitioners are the intended audience, but interns and advanced practice nurses would find it a helpful resource as well.
Features: "The book covers multiple symptomology, diagnostic testing, and interpretation of results. It also includes a review of anatomy, i.e., the location of nerves and their innervation areas. It is designed well, making it easy to find information. The index makes it easy to locate specific topics. The book even includes common terms in different languages. "
Assessment: The pocket handbook I used in the past did not have nearly as much information as this one does on diagnostics, the physical examination, etc. This book does a good job of condensing the information.
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Anna L. Jarrett, PhD, ACNS, ACNP, FNP - BC(University of Arkansas)
Description: This is a condensed emergency department pocket reference for daily practice, review for boards, or as a check when encountering a zebra in practice. The author states that the book evolved from distilled notes for oral exams.
Purpose: The purpose is to focus on clinically essential or overlooked aspects of care in the emergency department. The author says one should use the book to "double-check" things. This book has a previously established reputation for meeting the needs of providers everywhere.
Audience: This book is targeted for medical students, residents, physicians, and physician assistants. It is written by an MD and peer reviewed by radiologists, physicians, physician assistants, and an attorney. The author and peer reviewers are credible authorities However, an advanced practice registered nurse peer reviewer was missing.
Features: The book covers some basic, but mostly complex topics. The seven sections start with history and physical exam and end with appendixes for empiric antibiotics and resuscitation guidelines. The best section of the book is section 3, which presents procedures sorted by body system, making it quite easy to find in a hurry. The billing table in section five is compelling. However, there are two shortcomings. The first is section six, which covers medical literature, career, and wellness. These topics seem to be more suitable as armchair reading than in a pocket guide. The biggest shortcoming of the book is the small print to accommodate a pocket-sized reference, which makes it difficult to read.
Assessment: This is a handy book. It is most useful as a pocket guide for practice, and it continues to be a highly regarded resource. The second edition content has been updated.
