    This should be your FIRST read.

    My son is autistic. It is still painful to write those words. When we got the diagnosis we turned into information processing machines. I found that, while all have good intentions, most authors on this subject will focus on ONE and ONLY ONE way of dealing with autism. All other treatments are frequently deemed inferior and a waste of time. Autism is a spectrum disorder with a spectrum of causes and treatments. Cohen is one of a few even-handed presentations of the causes and available treatments that I have found. She lists the advantages and pitfalls of many causes and many treatments in ways that made it hard for me to miss the forest for the trees. It is VITAL that all causes be explored for the autistic child. Only then can the proper treatment be started. We ruled out food alergies, hearing disorders and several other causes for my son. We have been blessed in that we were financially and emotionally able to start an intensive in-home ABA program for him. By the grace of God, all is going well. Cohen's book has been an irreplacable reference point to keep us grounded and focused. As I stated above, please, make this your FIRST read. God bless you, Ms. Cohen.
