Overview

Tarot Card Combinations is a unique, comprehensive, and extremely practical guide for interpreting the tarot. Dorothy Kelly starts with basic tarot definitions of each card, including important keywords, and provides explanations of basic layouts and the difference between upright and reversed cards. Where this book departs from the typical, basic "cookbook" approach, and what separates it from many other books about the tarot, is Kelly's presentation of cards in seemingly endless combinations -- revealing how the cards relate to each other and endowing each card in a layout or combination with richer meaning and more subtle nuances than when considered alone. Beginning tarot readers will learn the basics with an easy-to-follow, organic system of card interpretation. Intermediate practitioners can build on what they already know, and for advanced readers, Tarot Card Combinations will provide new insight and food for thought. Kelly's system can be used to enrich both literal and intuitive readings by providing new keywords to flesh out literal card-by-card readings, and to provide more structure to ground what can admittedly be flights of fancy in purely intuitive interpretations. The combinations are illustrated and explained using the popular Waite deck. Hundreds of 2-, 3-, 4- and even 5-card combinations are explained. While Kelly can't possibly cover every possible combination of cards, she actually goes one step better -- instead of relying on rote memorization of interminable lists of card combinations, she actually shows how to find meanings in card combinations not listed and how to apply them in readings. This very original and useful book will find a treasured space on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the tarot!

An Essential Book For the Tarot Reader

I have been studying tarot for three years and have a multitude of books on the subject-but I have to say that this book is an absolute essential to learning to read the tarot cards in combinations.....It is the one book that I have gained the most insight with how to actually read the cards...Its complete, yet simple-not at all complicated and very easy to understand..After 3 years of studying tarot-I still could not completely read the cards as a whole-in conjunction with the other cards until I read this book....I recommend it to anyone who has difficulty trying to put the cards together in a reading. This book takes you from reading the cards from their singular meanings to combining them to give a more complete and accurate reading-it is definitely a must have...

    Going deeper

I've been reading tarot since 1989 and enjoying the process of developing my skills as a reader and going deeper into the symbolism of the cards. This book is an outstanding resource for anyone looking to understand layouts, combinations and using reversal meanings to get more nuance out of your decks. I'm glad I found it and can recommend it will be worth adding to your library. A word of caution, this really is not for a beginner. There are many beginning books that delve into the individual meanings of the cards. This book is for when you are reading to take the next step.

    OK

To use her system you will have to relearn her word associations with each card. I don't think it is absolute but is a good prospective on how to combine the cards. As with all things with the Tarot, the cards can vary with your lay out and the preception.

    Useful

It was not the best book of the Tarot combinations I've read. It doesn't give full explanation even of Major Arcane combinations.
