While the first part of the deck is extraordinary, full of vibrant colors and whimsical characters with flowing hair and beards tied with ribbons and a circus vibe, the minor arcana is as routine as a deck of playing cards. It's extremely difficult to pick up any sort of divinatory meaning when you're staring at a picture of a couple of swords without any clue as to that particular card's meaning. It's really too bad because the images on the other cards are so awesome! I definitely feel like i was gypted (is that an un-PC term?). Alas, now i'm searching for another deck that i groove on...
I was disappointed to find out there were no illustrated minor arcana in this deck. The major arcana's fabulous and one of a kind in terms of art. Some people have said that the illustrations are 'weird' or 'spooky,' because Fergus Hall paints in an atypical, surrealist style. Some of my favorite cards were the hermit (which pictures an old man reading on a rock in hte ocean with steaming peas and mashed potatoes on a nearby rock), temperance (an angelic butterfly woman), and the tower. The booklet that comes with the deck is very helpful. Unless you find a really good deal on this deck, I don't recommend it unless you're collecting, since it's hard to work with for divinatory readings
This was the first deck I ever owned. I bought it in 1975, when there weren't nearly as many choices of decks available. At that time, I'd never even seen a tarot deck before I spotted this one in a toyshop. Fortunately, I acquired the Rider-Waite deck a few weeks later, and through it became enamoured of tarot card reading. Had this deck been the only one I ever owned, I doubt I'd still be reading cards today. The major arcana cards have a somewhat whimsical quality to the illustrations, and I find them not unattractive; however, they do a very poor job of conveying the intrinsic archetypal meanings of the cards. The minor arcana cards are just simple 'pip' cards, again, they do nothing to convey the meanings of the cards. For a user who is so familiar with the meanings that just thinking about the numerical values can evoke certain images, they'll work. But they aren't for beginners. UrsulaMatria Borealis
