Tasmanian Devil: Nighttime Scavenger

Overview

In the 1880s, people who lived in Tasmania feared a beast that had a spine-chilling scream, strong jaws, and a huge appetite for meat. They believed this animal to be so evil that they named it the Tasmanian devil. Was this creature really as horrible as they thought? Biologist Nick Mooney has worked with the devils for many years. Look inside to discover what he has learned about this fascinating and uncommon creature.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
A vicious, black Tasmanian Devil fills the cover of this book from the "Uncommon Animal" series. The book offers high interest spreads with titles like "Screams in the Dark," "Killing the Devils," "Night Dwellers," and "A Screaming Match." The layout includes twelve two-page spreads with short sections of text written in large print. The concise text consists of high interest information, such as the facts that the animal eats one third of its body weight in a single meal and that it has been known to eat things like aluminum foil, a pencil, and a knee from a pair of jeans. The text includes bold words that are defined in the glossary at the end of the book. Many colorful photos and an 1806 sketch depict the creature in a natural setting and show it up close as it is being studied. A map clearly indicates the location of Tasmanian Devils in the world. Sidebars and picture captions hold additional facts. The book will work well as a supplement to social studies and science lessons in the classroom. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
