Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The mystery of how the sense of taste works is explained in this installment from "A True Book" series. Chapter One, "It Tastes So Good," is an overview of how important taste is. Chapter Two, "The Tongue," describes the tasks and physical makeup of the tongue. Chapter Three, "The Taste Buds," explains how taste buds work and explains the four traditional tastes as well as the possible fifth taste, meaty. Chapter Four, "Taste and Smell," describes the relationship between the nose and the mouth. Chapter Five, "Take Care of Your Sense of Taste," lists things that people can do to ensure that their sense of taste is always acute. A few single page blurbs of fun facts about taste round out the text of the book. Glossy photos, close-ups, and diagrams provide lots of visual interest. This book would be a good addition to any health or science class. 2003, Scholastic,

Gr 2-4-Each large-print text discusses the organ or body part responsible for its sense, how the brain reacts to sensory receptors, and ways of maintaining sensory health. Each book has a fact page of trivia about its respective sense. Clear diagrams, close-up photographs of children, and magnified images illustrate these titles. Given the amount of unfamiliar terminology in each book, it is unfortunate that there are no pronunciation guides. Nonetheless, these are well-written, accurate, and readable choices.-Pamela K.
