Overview

A good cookbook is a priceless addition for food connoisseurs. This one-of-a-kind cookbook consists of recipes rich in Russian culture and tales of old Russian folklore. Each page features a unique recipe, along with a folklore tale. The whole family can enjoy the taste with the tale. Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Kiev will take the reader back to the glamour and decadence of Czarist Russia. I chose the recipes that have been passed on from my grandmother to my mother, who continues to share them with me. Most of these recipes had never been written down on paper, but rather are cooked from memory. Each and every one brings back the aroma and unique taste from my days growing up in the former Soviet Union to today, when I still enjoy treating my family.

This is so cool. I actually had a pleasure of meeting the author and it was a pure accident that I got the copy that I recently bought signed. It makes it that more special and exciting. After thinking that this book is just so well designed and unique, meeting the person behind the book just made it that more special. Alla is a fantastic person as well as a brilliant writer. Love the book and appreciate the author.

Decided to see what the hype is all about. Saw the profile on myspace and we run a site that is always in search for arcticles, books, products and especially the ones that apply to or produced by women. Needless to say that we are going to be doing a spread on this great little find called Tastes and Tales. What a wonderful book. Refreshing concept, interesting tales, amazing recipes and much more. For anyone who is interested should try. We highly recommend it and will be posting our layout on this piece of cookbook literature.

I have seen and tried many books. Not to say that they are not up to par, but how can someone write about something without prior cultural first hand experience. Not the case in this book. The author was born and raised in Russia. It shows, it communicates and gets the message across to you when you are following the instructions, reading the tales and enjoying a part of the world that so much different from ours. I like this book a lot and besides enjoying it myself, would like to point out that it makes a heck of a gift.

I am not a cook, by far. I enjoy trying things and see if they come out, but I do however enjoy eating. The book has taken me through step by step instructions and I found it to be easy. Even I could do it. Besides the recipes, I also found it to be a nice source of some art and fairy tales. Nice book. Like it a lot.

Got this one for my girlfriend Jeniffer, with a touch of a hint, but got no meal out of it :). Just Kidding... She really liked the book. She enjoyed the contents, the format and the information is great to follow and understand. She did try some recipes and said it was very easy to follow. Great collector's item as well.

I have to say, that from the looks can be decieving, this is it. Small, but very nice looking book that packs incredible amount of information (recipes, tales and even some art). Very impressive in deed. A++ to the author and my highest recommendation to book, cooking, history, fairy tales and art lovers.

When you purchase this book, you get a 3 in one collection. What an original and unique idea. Very clever. You get the best of ethnic recipes from Old Mother Russia, enjoy the tales that have been told in many languages and originated by word of mouth and also a reach classic Russian art. When you flip through the pages, you will trigger your five senses and truely appreciate what the author has put together for you. It is absolutely a bang for a buck. I think so and so does my wife. Got it on Valentines and certainly improved my marriage, I think. Great buy.

I think every book should offer more to the reader. I like books that have a bung for the buck and in this one, we have nice collection of russian cultural areas. Very nice buy.

I am by all means not a cook and to me, a great cook book, if I can take it and make something by following the instructions. That is the case in this book. I have made a few dishes and they came out tasting great and it was easy for me to follow. The tales are very nice and great addition to pass the time. I am glad, that I got this one and so as the rest of my family.

Russia is facinating, especially since the cold war is over and now they are our friends. The Russian food has always been of high interest to me, since my grandparents came from Latvia, which used to be one of the republics. When I saw this book, I was excited to learn what recipes and stories I can relate with. I remember my grandmother telling me some folklore, when I was a child and I figured I can do the same for my kids. What an incredible book. Nice compbination of food that I can prepare and wow my family and tales that I can read to my children to pass on the heritage.

Very good book for the whole family to enjoy! My kids loved the stories and my husband loved the food.

As the headline says, there is no other cookbook out there that relates historic fables and fairytales with traditional recipies. The recipies and fables are rooted deep within russian culture. I bought this as a gift for my mother, who can relate to it all so well. When I first came to this country, she would always read and tell me these stories to help me learn about my heritage, and most certainly as in any russo-american household, we often enjoyed many of the recipies found in this text. :-)

This is just a great little addition to my cook book library at home. I love Russian culture, the people, the stories, history and now the food. The author puts together something really interesting for readers to enjoy. Recipes and old Russian folklore tales. How brilliant!! I just love this book.

Hey, saw the book on myspace and decided to try it. Wow, what a cool book. Nice stories, nice pics and very cool and easy to follow recipes. Love it. Bought one for my mom too.

There are only few recipies provided by the author. Would be nice if there were picture accompanied recepies. The pictures that accompany tales are very poor in quality.

The recipes in the book have very little to do with Russian cuisine. They are gathered from different former Soviet Union Republics which are now different countries and not Russia by any means. Kharcho (page 73), Chicken Kiev (page 102), Gozinakh (page 142) and so on are not Russian dishes. Instructions in recipes are not broken down step by step. Not easy to follow. The tales in the book are translated from some other source but this source is not cited. The quality of the illustrations in Danishevsky’s book are of extremely poor quality. They are well known pictures, however, there are no annotations about their authors or titles. At the same time of course it is written “all rights reserved” on the first page. I think you do not have to worry about reserving your rights – there is nothing to reserve in this book… Overly simplified table of contents which only lists food categories and not recipes. Few recipes overall in the book. DO NOT BUY this book.
