Designed as a guide to common foodstuffs, this book is a gem. It provides rating tables listing best to worst brands of basic pantry foods, as determined by tasting panels composed of food experts who judged rice, pasta, margarine, mustard, ice cream, tunain all, 34 staples of the kitchen, including some specialty items such as caviar and truffles. The real value of the book, however, comes in the information preceding the ratings: the history of the product, how it is made, varieties available, handling and storage at home, and how to judge a good product.
