Children's Literature
Well, let me tell you, these are Bible Tales such as you have never read before. Kind of different cadence of language, if you know what I mean. Totally modern. Cool even. But totally accurate, do not fret about that. Lots of reference to today's times, like (in the desert before the manna came), "And what about some protein? Where's the beef?" followed by, "it tasted like whatever the eater wanted it to taste like. You might say that manna was the original tofu." Well, you get what I mean. Tongue-in-cheek, clichs that click, not at all boring. They are even refreshing, quite a bit of fun. And then there are the recipes, for every variety of food but featuring lots of Middle Eastern fare (what else? It's set in the Middle East, right?) like Eggplant Omelet, Jacob's Lentil Stew, Homemade Hummus (from "Sarah: The First Hostess With the Mostest"), Caraway Seed Cabbage Salad (from "Ruth Reaps Her Rewards), and lots more. For the faint-hearted, or more traditional, there are also recipes for Hot Milk with Cinnamon, "Grape" Fruit Salad ("No Sour Grapes for Noah") and Good Morning Matzah Brie. Includes a metric conversion table and simply wonderful, upbeat, bright, appealing pictures. This book is sure to be a winner among the school age children to which it is targeted and also their adult or teen kitchen helpers. 2003, Kar-Ben, Ages 7 to 11.

Gr 2-6-This tempting book gives readers more than just food for thought. Hip retellings of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Sarah, and other figures are each accompanied by two or three recipes, for example, "Barley & Onions" for the story of Ruth and "Persian Kebab" for the story of Esther. The language is modern and approachable, as when Deborah says, "I call the shots," and Moses tells his people, "Listen up, we've got important work to do." Color illustrations, many of them full page, are animated and boldly rendered, and the recipes are surrounded by pictures of tasty-looking ingredients. A recipe index and table of metric conversions are included. Children will be intrigued by this welcome addition to religious collections.-Sandra Kitain, Abrams Hebrew Academy, Yardley, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
