    Too few "tattoo" images

It's definetely worth the $9.95 price tag, but I was hoping for a LOT more images. It's actually only about 10 different images that you can change around with photoshop to make it more to your liking. I think it was more informative when it comes to learning how to use photoshop than it was for tattoo design.

A great place to start for an aspiring tattoo artist

I found the book to be very useful. It is laid out well with easy to follow instructions and full color images. It is written as a companion for Photoshop and/or Photoshop Elements and for those who know nothing about these applications it's a great way to learn how they work. I believe that Photoshop Elements 6 is the version upon which this book was written but the directions are easily followed even if you have an earlier or later version as most of the software's functions remain relatively unchanged from version to version.

The first part of the book includes a brief history and introduction to tattoos. Moving on, you get an introduction to digital tattoo design which talks about mousing, using graphics tablets, different printer types and obtaining images from the internet. There is then a primer on Photoshop and Photoshop Elements describing tools and brushes and then a section on designing tattoos. There are then lessons in blocking in base colors and how to choose colors for your work. You get a lesson on shading and highlighting followed by a lesson on how to highlight and detail to represent different materials like skin, hair, plastic, rubber, cloth and metal. After which there is a lesson on airbrushing technique which then leads you directly into all the different designs in the book described below.

The companion CD which comes with the book includes quite a few templates for use in your projects and you have full rights to use any included image without having to pay royalties. There are 7 different categories of designs including Traditional Designs, Tribal Designs, Cartoon and Cute, Horror and Scary, Wildlife, and Mythical Creatures.

Traditional designs includes such things as daggers, hearts, roses & swallows, Japanese Yakuza styles and crosses. The Tribal section includes many standard tribal patterns from small to large designs and even bands. There are also Celtic, Maori and Native American animals & symbols & heads and finally Vikings. The Cartoon and Cute section has elephants, hippos, red devils, and feminine designs. Horror and Scary has skulls, demons and bio-mechanical designs.

There is also a section on symbols including suns, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese birth signs. Wildlife has dolphins and koi carp. Mythical creatures has dragons, cherubs and phoenixes. There are over 500 distinct patterns from which to choose that you can mix and match as you like and the book shows you how to use layers to layout your designs. All images are in black and white but adding color is easy and using Photoshop's drawing tools you can add as much or as little custom work to the templates as you like. After a while, you might even feel confident enough to create your own original work.

In the world of tattoo art these images are what is called 'flash' or common images that can be found in any tattoo shop on the walls but this book gives you the tools to customize and create your own works of art. All in all, this is an excellent place to start for a beginning artist which also serves as a good workbook for learning to use Photoshop. The book describes nearly every tool in Photoshop Elements and how they can be used and a good deal of information on how to use layers to create different effects.

If you want to learn how to create tattoo art or even just a book to learn how to use Photoshop Elements this is definitely the book to pick up.
