Tavener: Fall and Resurrection

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Since Haydn's "Creation," and probably even before that, composers have attempted to express cosmic mysteries through music. In FALL AND RESURRECTION, John Tavener has, in his own words, "tried to encompass, in brief glimpses, the events which have taken place since the beginning of time, and before time." From the almost inaudible rumblings that represent the "silence, darkness" to the ecstatic "Cosmic Dance of the Resurrection," Tavener's hour-long oratorio is dramatically concise, yet it creates an impression of numinous vastness. The composer draws on tried-and-true modern techniques, including cacophonous orchestral outbursts to depict chaos and mesmerizing minimalist repetition to evoke spiritual rapture. Blended together with sounds from the East -- including the sinuous piping of the ney flute and the feral whoop of the ram's horn -- it sounds like vintage Tavener. Richard Hickox leads a hypnotic performance, with superb choral singing and stratospheric solos by Patricia Rozario, the composer's favorite soprano. In this live recording from St. Paul's Cathedral, Chandos captures the spacious sound with an aurally awesome combination of clarity and atmosphere.
