Tavener: The Veil of the Temple (Hybrid SACD)

Editorial Reviews

New York Times - Anne Midgette
Mr. Tavener's piece [runs] about seven hours in its original form. It is severely abridged here to fit on two discs.... Mr. Tavener's music is incidental music, written to be part of a specific experience. That experience seeks to go beyond the normal boundaries - of a church service or of a classical concert. But as a result, the focus is more on the experience itself and less on the composition. It's not that the long swatches of music are unpleasant to listen to. They create a definite mood. A user's advisory for this CD could be: pour wine, dim lights and listen by candlelight.

This two-disc abridgement [of The Veil of the Temple] recorded in London in 2003 truly captures the music's special aura.... Though the recording's strong sense of atmosphere invites an emotional response to the music, it also repays serious attention.
