All of 16 when she recorded this debut album, country-pop singer Taylor Swift's considerably strong voice straddles that precarious edge that both suggests experience far beyond her years and simultaneously leaves no doubt that she's still got a lot of life to live. It's a fresh, still girlish voice, full of hope and naïveté, but it's also a confident and mature one.

Overview

All of 16 when she recorded this debut album, country-pop singer Taylor Swift's considerably strong voice straddles that precarious edge that both suggests experience far beyond her years and simultaneously leaves no doubt that she's still got a lot of life to live. It's a fresh, still girlish voice, full of hope and naïveté, but it's also a confident and mature one. That Swift is a talent to be reckoned with is never in doubt: her delivery on tracks like the uptempo "The Outside," the spare acoustic ballad "Mary's Song (Oh My My My)," and especially the leadoff track, "Tim McGraw," which was the first single from the album, is that of a seasoned pro, despite Swift's newcomer status. "Tim McGraw" may also be the album's highlight -- not a teenager's tribute to the country superstar, it instead uses McGraw as a marker in a lover's time line: "When you think Tim McGraw/I hope you think my favorite song." It's a device that's been used countless times in as many ways, that of associating a failed affair with items, places, and people, yet it works as a hook here and manages to come off as an original idea. Swift wrote or co-wrote every song on the record, a fairly remarkable feat considering the sophisticated manner in which she treats matters near and dear to the heart of one her age ("Now that I'm sitting here thinking it through/I've never been anywhere cold as you"). Producer/mentor Nathan Chapman has applied to some of Swift's songs a gloss that not all of them really require and in some cases would do better to shed. But Swift has no trouble overcoming any blandness taking place around her. She's come up with a commendable starter album that's as accomplished as any by a ten-year veteran who's seen a lot more road and felt a lot more emotion. Swift's young age may be a major point of interest in bringing listeners in, but by the end of the record she's succeeded in keeping them. [Big Machine reissued the album with bonus tracks in 2008.]

After hearing Taylor Swift on CMT, I went on Rhapsody and decided to check out her music. I instantly fell in love with her songs and have downloaded all but three of her songs on my iPod so that I can listen to them all the time and learn the words so that I can sing along. I love Our Song, Teardrops on my guitar and Tim McGraw but my all time favorite is Marys Song (Oh my my my)! I LOVE THAT SONG! I sing it all the time and it is officially my favorite country song of all time. I hope that she definitely makes another album in the future. Well done Taylor!

My favorties are Tim McGraw, Picture to burn, Teardrops on my guitar, should've said no, mary's song (oh my my my) and our song. Those are my favorites but all the songs are great. This is a great start and it leaves you anxious for her next album! My favorite song is "Teardrops on my Guitar." The songs are light and fun to listen to. It's even more impressive that she wrote/co-wrote ALL the songs - At 16! Great if you like pop-country, like Carrie Underwood (her voice is, understandably, a little less mature than Carrie's, but still amazing) or the Wreckers.

This is a pretty amazing CD. I got hooked on the song after hearing it on CMT. I love Tayor Swift's girlish voice. The only thing I'm dissapointed about is the word in "Teardrops on my Guitar". That just ruined the whole song. I also love "Tim McGraw" ,"Our Song", and #10.

This CD is without a doubt the best CD I have ever heard in my life, and being an advid music lover, I have heard a lot of CDs. The songs are beautiful, not only because of the great melodies and Taylor's amazing voice, but also because of the heartfelt lyrics. Because she wrote all these songs, she really means what she's singing about. And when she wrote them, she was just another kid in a regular high school like most of us, so pretty much anyone can relate to her songs. I know that I can relate to every single one of them, in some way or other. My favorite songs would probably be "A Place in This World", "The Outside", "Tied Together With a Smile", "Picture to Burn", and "Teardrops on My Guitar". But I love every single one of them. My friend gave me this CD for my birthday, because I had heard "Teardrops" on the rasio and told her I liked it. The first time I listened to the CD, I fell in love with it. I listen to the CD so much now, I sometimes hear the songs playing in my sleep! The only bad thing about this CD is that after hearing it, I have never found anoher CD that quite adds up. Also, I would like to say that I noticed a lot of the other reviews were big Carrie Underwood fans, which might give the impression that Taylor's music would only be liked be teenage girls. Although they do make up a good percentage of her fans, prety much ANYONE can love her music. I know several guys that have her CD on their ipods. So don't think this CD isn't for you, just because you're not a Carrie Underwood fan, or a teenage girl.

Taylor Swift is a great pop artist!! My personal favorites are: Our Song, and Teardrops On My Guitar. Her songs never get old! Like CASCADA (without the techno) her songs never get "overplayed" or annoying!
