    Essential Reference for the Gardener

Taylor's Guides are the first books I reach for when seeking practical information about gardening. As with all the titles in the series, Taylor's Guide to Perennials is an essential reference book I recommend adding to your library. The information provided is brief but contains nearly everything a moderately experienced gardener needs to make intelligent choices.

The book opens with a general introductory section that includes selecting a site, bed preparation, propagation and insect and disease control. This is followed by an all-color photographic gallery of plants with general information like light and soil requirements, height and zone hardiness. Each entry is crossed referenced to the encyclopedia of plants where more detailed information is provided. Both the gallery and encyclopedia are arranged alphabetically providing for quick look-ups. The index includes common names which is helpful for finding plants for which you do not know the botanical name. A hardiness zone map is included.

Some odd editorial choices do make me scratch my head; for example, Clematis is represented only by the non-climbing species. Even with such anomalies, this is a book that has helped me become a very knowledgeable gardener.

Title says it all ~ "Taylor's Guide to Perennials". Guide to more than 600 flowering and foliage plants, including ferns and grasses.

This is an exceptional, easy to use reference guide for gardening perennial plants. Alphabetized by Latin names of plants but cross referenced with their common names so you can easily find the plant you are looking for without knowing Latin. Beautiful photos with a brief synopsis of each plant in the forward portion of the book with more detailed gardening instructions in the latter half of the book. An inspiring book for the gardener for ideas. Assists you in choosing the right plant for the your conditions with a good "how to grow" section for care of the plant. Also have used "Taylor's Guide to Shrubs" and "Taylor's Guide to Bulbs" and am equally as happy with these guides. Great gift for your fellow gardening friends.
