Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker; Shostakovich: The Bolt, Suite

All Music Guide - James Leonard
An odd but persuasive program drawn from two concerts, one in 1981, the other in 1987, this BBC Music disc joins three ballets by three of the greatest Russian masters of the genre -- Tchaikovsky's whole of Act II of "The Nutcracker," Shostakovich's Suite from "The Bolt," and Stravinsky's "Scènes de ballet" -- led by one of the greatest Russian masters of the baton -- Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Some might wonder at the selection -- why all of Act II? why only a Suite? why "Scènes de ballet," one of Stravinsky's weakest neo-Classical scores, when so many more characteristic works suggest themselves? -- but few could question the conviction of the performances.
Rozhdestvensky is not only a superb ballet conductor -- his years at the Bolshoi in the '60s taught him to keep his tempos inviting and his rhythms light on their feet -- but he is a superb interpreter of these scores. With the BBC Symphony -- his orchestra from 1978 through 1981 -- Rozhdestvensky makes "The Nutcracker" sound less like a beauty pageant and more like the apotheosis of the fairy tale, "The Bolt" sound less like a Soviet screed and more like the epitome of ironic humor, and "Scènes de ballet" sound less like Stravinsky's attempt at writing for Broadway -- which it was -- and more like his attempt at composing a piece of pure classical dance -- which it might have been. Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall, BBC's sound is cool, clear, and colorful.
