Don't 'teach yourself' with this book...

This book has become a soporific that I read at night when I am having trouble drifting off to sleep. It starts slowly and goes downhill from there. The cute illustration on the cover (various electronics parts arranged as a Chinese food meal) led me to believe the book would have a little 'zip' and hold my interest. Not so. I am a technical writer in the Electrical Engineering department of a large company. I wanted to gain more technical knowledge of electronics, which would be of great benefit in my work. If you are in a similar situation, save yourself some money and avoid this book. It takes a somewhat boring subject and makes it even drier.

    The best electronics intro

I have the previous three editions of this book and just bought this 4th edition. The first thing I noticed was the improvement in the quality of the illustrations. The text reads better as well. It's more clear and there are not as many distractions. The first three editions had some weird analogies, but this version seems more direct. The typeset is smaller than it was in previous editions, so the book looks smaller but it's really not! The binding is better. That was a problem in the 3rd edition which fell apart on me after a couple years. I'm sure this book will become one of the most often-used electronics books in my collection. Just a note: The emphasis is on analog technologies and communications. It's all theory. Good for learning the fundamentals, but not a design manual.
