Completely different from the older edition by Glendening -- this book by Jónsdóttir is jut the perfect introduction to contemporary Icelandic. You should try also Colloquial Icelandic, by Daisy L. Neijmann.

I am a native Icelander and I wanted to brush up on my Icelandic since I have been out of Iceland for 20 years, I found this book to be very helpful in grammar and in vocabulary. The vocabulary is not outdated, it is the word used by all age levels in which you can use with all different age groups. I recommend this book to everyone.

While this book may be reasonable for linguists or people with extensive experience with Skandinavian languages, it is virtually intractable for newcomers to the field. Grammatical concepts are merely sketched with little or no explanation. The pronunciation guide is extrememly cumbersome, listing phonetic symbols without clearly telling students which Icelandic letters represent which sounds. Translation exercises require grammatical concepts before they have been introduced in the text and the glossary is woefully incomplete. Definitely NOT a text for beginners!

As I said, this is an OK book, but it is outdated in many ways. For example, they say 'ég hefi' for 'I have', 'þökk fyrir', they still use a 'z', and etc. This book is a bit difficult for beginners who don't have a good understanding of Icelandic. This book just throws a bunch of information at you at once and expects you to remember it.
