While her classmates bring in apples, make drawings, pick dandelions, and clean the blackboard, Maybella Jean Wishywashy cannot decide how to show their teacher how much she is appreciated.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
After surviving School Picture Day, Mrs. Shepherd and her class return in Teacher Appreciation Day also by Plourde, illus. by Thor Wickstrom. Maybella Jean Wishywashy can't decide how to honor her teacher, and makes one well-intentioned mess after another, which Mrs. Shepherd stoically endures. A rhyming, read-aloud refrain and zany artwork showing Maybella's antics pack the punch in this tale of the eventual victory of the nonconformist. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Oh no! Teacher Appreciation Day is tomorrow and Maybella Jean Wishwashy can't decide what to give her teacher Mrs. Shepherd. Her classmates all know exactly how to show their appreciation: by bringing in apples (the official teacher gift), wearing green (her favorite color), drawing pictures of her dog, cleaning chalkboards, and picking dandelions. Maybella operates by the more-is- better-rule; she brings a grocery cart full of food, wears a rainbow of clothes, draws picture of all sorts of pets, compiles a horde of nature gifts, and cleans everything in the classroom. When a TV crew comes to tape a piece on Teacher Appreciation Day, everyone but Maybella becomes too tongue-tied to express what they like about their teacher. She yells "Everything!" and gives Mrs. Shepherd a super-size hug. Wickstrom's bright and lively cartoon-like illustrations capture Maybella's personality and dilemma as she fights giving Mrs. Shepherd a "cookie cutter" gift. This will be as popular with school-age children as Plourde's and Wickstom's earlier book, School Picture Day. 2003, Dutton, Ages 5 to 8.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Maybella Jean Wishywashy can't make up her mind about what to give her teacher or what to wear for Teacher Appreciation Day. While the other kids in Mrs. Shepherd's class bring apples, the indecisive girl brings a grocery cart full of assorted foods. The other children wear green, their teacher's favorite color, but Maybella wears every color of the rainbow. So it goes all day as she approaches each dilemma with a different "Eeny meeny miney-" rhyme. When a TV crew comes to tape the class for a news special, all the other youngsters are too tongue-tied to say what they like about their teacher, but Maybella rescues the situation by loudly asserting that she likes "EVERYTHING!" about the woman. Wickstrom's lively, color cartoon illustrations ably portray the heroine's excesses. While the misfit who saves the day is a much-used plot, it has surefire appeal. Maybella's solutions to her inability to make decisions are silly and far-fetched, which just adds to the humor. Plourde and Wickstrom teamed up for School Picture Day (Dutton, 2002), an equally implausible but pleasant story about Mrs. Shepherd's class, and this tale should be just as popular.-Louise L. Sherman, formerly at Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, NJ Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
It's all a matter of proportion, suggests Plourde, and Maybella Jean Wishywashy just hasn't got any. It's teacher appreciation day at school and every student knows what they are going to do for their teacher, Mrs. Shepherd, whom readers first met in School Picture Day (2002). They will give her apples and wear clothes of her favorite color and scrub her blackboard squeaky clean. Maybella can't decide what to do, so she figures everything is better than nothing: A shopping cart full of goodies, all of her clothes rather than an outfit, polishing the whole classroom instead of just the board. "Well, that was very . . . thoughtful of you," Mrs. Shepherd halting responds, "Er, that was very . . . generous of you." It's only when the local TV station appears that Maybella shines. When all the other students get tongue-tied, Maybella positively barks she likes "everything" about Mrs. Shepherd. Exuberance and independent thinking don't get much of a salute here ("everybody knows apples are the official teacher treat")-Maybella's not portrayed as a winning sprite, but as too much-especially considering the tepid, vaguely sniffy replies she gets from Mrs. Shepherd. On the other hand, Wickstrom's artwork is full of life and floats this dour boat beyond expectations. Teachers will appreciate it. (Picture book. 4-7)

Meet the Author

Lynn Plourde and Thor Wickstrom are the author-illustrator team who created another book about Mrs. Shepherd's class, School Picture Day. Publishers Weekly called it "a zany portrait [and] a winning snapshot of an unconventional heroine whose curiosity saves the day."

My 4 year old daughter loves this book

My 4 year old daughter 'reads' this book in her bed every night. We've renewed it from the library several times, and now it's time to buy our own. I think she likes it so much because it's about a girl who loves her teacher so much, she can't decide what to do for her on Teacher Appreciation Day. I think most 4 and 5 year olds feel that way about their teachers, so she can relate to it.
