Overview

This book is offered as an alternative approach to planning teaching. It is an alternative to the dominant procedure recommended for planning lessons and units of study, and an alternative to some of the dominant principles recommended for selecting content for teaching. The dominant model and principles are derived from educational research and theorizing that has almost entirely ignored the power and educational uses of children's imagination. A constant focus of this book, then, will be on areas of children's intellectual activity in which we can see imagination at work, or play.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Egan (education, Simon Fraser U., Canada) proposes a radical model for elementary education that engages children's imagination by tapping into one of the basic forms of making sense of the world and of our experiences: stories and story telling. His book contains numerous examples of how the story form can be used in planning classes in social studies and language arts as well as in subjects like math and science. A paper edition ($7.95) is available. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
