Description: This is a compilation of instructional cases focusing on imaging in gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases.
Purpose: In the editors' words, this atlas is "a comprehensive and concise...image based case review that takes you through the gamut of common (and a few uncommon) disease diagnoses" encountered in abdominal imaging. The teaching atlas is a valuable educational tool for residents in training looking for a broad overview and for established practitioners seeking a concise review of a given entity. The authors achieve the goal with 155 interesting and instructional cases.
Audience: The target audience is radiologists practicing abdominal imaging with a focus on gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases. The editors are noted experts in the field on staff at Massachusetts General Hospital. The cases have been selected from the teaching rounds conducted daily at this hospital.
Features: Each case is presented in four pages and illustrated with three to five images. All imaging modalities are used, but most are CT images. The images are high quality; none of the ultrasound images have color. The imaging findings are presented, followed by the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. The discussion includes background, clinical findings, complications, imaging findings, treatment, and prognosis. The case concludes with pearls and pitfalls. Several references are provided for readers desiring additional reading; many of these date from several years ago. All abdominal organs are covered with multiple cases. The discussions are excellent, providing just the right amount of detail for a capsule summary.
Assessment: This is an outstanding teaching atlas in abdominal imaging. I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the cases; they are well illustrated and well written. The atlas will be placed in our reading room alongside other valuable references. I will definitely recommend it to my residents, who enjoy this format for learning.
