Overview

Easy-to-implement strategies for teaching infants, toddlers, and twos with special needs. Placing children with special needs in environments that include typically developing peers has become commonplace as continuing research confirms that all children benefit and learn from each other as well as from their teachers.Teaching Infants, Toddlers, and Twos with Special Needs is written for all teachers and directors who work with infants, toddlers, and twos, including special educators and educators working with typically developing children. This book specifically addresses the needs of children with developmental delays, as well as children at risk for developing special needs. Each chapter includes information about how infants, toddlers, and twos learn. The strategies and adaptations in each chapter are easy to use and apply to all children. Examples are presented for managing the physical environment and for teaching skills that will enhance the overall development of infants, toddlers, and twos with special needs.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michelina P. Bonanno
Willis clearly states that young children benefit from age appropriate stimulation and education; furthermore, she espouses and promotes a philosophy of full classroom inclusion for children with physical and developmental delays and those who might be at risk for similar delays. She includes guidelines for referral to state agencies, as well as developmental assessment tools, developmental milestone charts and interventions in the form of tips and tools to use to help young children acquire age appropriate skills. Information is also provided to facilitate communication when working with families of at risk or developmentally delayed children. Jargon is kept to a minimum. Each chapter introduces new terms bolded within the text, and then supplies a list of new terms with definitions at the end of each chapter, along with lists of additional resources for further reading and a bibliography of resources used in the chapter. Photographs illustrate concepts conveyed and enhance the understanding of the reader. Other features include an appendix containing developmental charts and a cross referenced index. This workbook is an excellent source of curriculum support for teachers who work with very young children and an excellent resource for parents and those in teacher training. Reviewer: Michelina P. Bonanno, Ph.D.
