This is one of the best books I've read on the subject of teaching! This is a small book with a lot of value. Dr. Hendricks uses John Milton Gregory's seven laws of the learner and expanded on them. He made them come alive in a way that is contemporary and relevant to any teacher in Christian education, from the Sunday school teacher to the college professor. He makes the laws of the learner come alive in a new way by adapting each law into the acronym TEACHER. We are reminded of many profound truths of teaching, such as the necessity of continuing our own learning, leaving room for the learner to learn on his own, and the importance of involving the students. We are reminded of the importance of building relationships in and out of the classroom, the significance of teaching for heart knowledge instead of just head knowledge, the difference in learning with motivation than learning without motive, and the necessity of preparation, both for the teacher and for the student. After giving you great practical ways to teach, he gives the resources to teach others the same principles by giving lessons plans through the seven laws. It’s the best way to apply what you read through these pages. Hendricks helps you to find ways to communicate with your students in ways that that make it possible for them to glean the most from you, but also for you to glean from your teaching experiences. I appreciate Hendricks' passion for his students and for the art of teaching effective, which is communicated quite clearly in this book. His desire to teach in for effective change is contagious to those that that his advice to heart. I recommend this book to anyone teaching or evangelizing that desires to make their communication more effective. Check it out!
I am a youth minister for about a year and a half now and I really enjoyed this book. Dr. Hendricks is full of wonderful insight. I love how he breaks things down step by step and thoroughly explains everything. I was also very impressed by the way that he taught threw a series of personal stories; this made it very easy to follow along. I probably highlighted at least three or four paragraphs or sentences on each page. The old man is full of wisdom. I really like the way Dr. Hendricks goes through and breaks down the 7 laws of John M. Gregory about teaching and learning and how he prefaces all of that by talking about how passion and having the passion to communicate better is essential in becoming a better teacher. My favorite chapter is the Law of the Heart. Here Dr. Hendricks really challenges his readers to evaluate their own lives and he is very straight forward in convicting people that this is serious business. You can tell that Dr. Hendricks has had several personal failures and many of his own experiences, which is why this book is so amazing, he is speaking directly from his heart. This isn’t your typical boring informative book on teaching or personal evangelism. This book is filled with interesting stories and amazing insights, all of which left me unable to put it down. This is a very good book for someone younger to read who is just getting started in ministry, maybe that way he doesn’t have to go through some of the hardships this book deals with. I also like how Dr. Hendricks said that it is in fact false, an old dog can learn new tricks if properly motivated. So even if you are a seasoned veteran, this book has really good insight and applications for everyone. I would highly recommend Dr. Hendricks's book "Teaching to Change Lives" to anyone wanting to do just that, be able to teach in order to change lives. This book has given me a great deal to think about and apply to my own ministry. Excellent read!
