All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Team Sleep's debut was in the works for a long time -- something like ten years. Head Deftone Chino Moreno used to do four-track stuff with high-school pal Todd Wilkinson, and those casual recordings essentially were the genesis for this self-titled set of modernized mood music. The indie rock and dream pop influences drifting throughout Team Sleep appear in Moreno's day job, too, but barring a few stretches here and there "Blvd. Nights," the end of "Live from the Stage", hardness and volume are left largely to the Deftones. In fact, besides Moreno's distinctive vocals, there's little connectivity to his other band. There doesn't need to be. Team Sleep is its own thing, a...

Team Sleep is its own thing, a drifting fog of electronic and analog texture with a pool of interesting collaborators and the distinct feel of late-'80s/early-'90s alternative rock. Team Sleep could probably do an awesome cover version of Catherine Wheel's "Black Metallic." So, while "Your Skull Is Red" channels Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine underneath Moreno's plaintive wail, "Delorian" and "Staring at the Queen'" are instrumentals built from Wilkinson's spiny guitar leads and the ultramodern programming/turntablism of Crook. Pinback's Rob Crow contributes vocals on four songs, and while he's not as fervent as Moreno, he does give "Princeton Review" and "Ever Since WWI" an indie rock quality that works with their tense guitars. Mary Timony also guests, co-writing "Tomb of Liegia" with Wilkinson and Crook and matching her famously austere vocal to its chilly electronics and lingering piano figure. Her duet of sorts with Moreno on the beat-damaged "King Diamond" isn't as successful, but it's still a noble experiment on an album full of them. And though Team Sleep occasionally becomes too much of a mood album when its layering gets out of hand, it's a consistently interesting listen.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

One of the best little known CDs around.

If you're looking for something different and unique, this definitely fits the bill. Deftones lead singer, Chino, does amazing work in this CD along with several friends who take turns singing solo or with him. It's a great album to chill out to, with the dark flare of some of Deftone's softer work. This is one I have on repeat all the time.

    Great, subtle, moving listen

I wandered across this album. Never listened to the Deftones before. Nice, smoothe tracks, good blend of guitar and electronics. Very good singer. It's a great listen for folks that enjoy listening to various genres of music.

why would chino do deftones again?

first of all i just got to say that the deftones are my favourite band of all time..they are really smart at what they do and they always stay ahead of other bands in their field. I think chino is an awesome singer and it has always been known that he does love his heavy music but he is a big fan of the more softer ambient stuff...so when i heard that he was starting team sleep 5 years ago i was intrigued to see how it would turn out to be. well after 5 long years it is out and i have to say i do like it... alot different than deftones but chino began to hint towards his electronica fascination in white pony and a bit on the self titled. Team sleeps album is a slow mix but this works to its favour and for the people who were expecting the album to be like the deftones...why would chino, given the chance do something the same as deftones...it would defeat the purpose of the side project (eg daryl palumbo did his side project, head automatica and its totally different than glassjaw, given the chance to have a side project means u do something different)I think chino was brave enough to have a go at this...as it is not the type of music that everyone, including deftones fans would like. This album is great and i like it because it is different and not what is expected from chino. it is peaceful but at the same time moving and disturbing...if u love chino's singing definitely buy this album...anyways ive sucked up chino's arse long enough...buy this album but dont expect anything like deftones...more along the lines of massive attack + roni size + radiohead.

    interesting

umm...well...i was expecting something a little bit harder and faster from chino...but i guess not..this (from what i just listened to) is anything but...its very slow...and i guess relaxing...lol..i dunno...it didnt rub me the right way...haha..yeah...if you like slower music with awesome vocals...then go for it...i can compare this to "Lucky" off of deftones 4th album...sounds like that pretty much...

    the wait is over.

best album of 05 comes in the form an excellent mix of soft and hard & passion and pain. some revamped old songs, beatiful music and excellent guest spots (rob crow in particular) combine to make this a must-have for many kinds of music lovers. i cant say enough about this album.
