No doubt Keys has a fascinating story to tell-raised by a single mother, she's a classically trained, New York born-and-bred neo-soulster with two multiplatinum albums and five Grammys to her name-but she merely hints at it in this gathering of poems and lyrics. With their themes of loneliness, confusion, wonder and desire, most of Keys's free-verse poems could be the cris de coeur of any American 20-something: "Sometimes I feel/ like I don't belong anywhere/ And it's going to take so long/ for me to get somewhere/ Sometimes I feel so heavy-hearted/ but I can't explain/ cause I'm so guarded." But other poems hint at her world travels, her budding sense of social justice and her concerns about stardom ("When gone is the glory/ When gone is the shine/ Is gone the whole/ Of your fortune and pride?"). Nearly half of the book consists of lyrics from her two albums, Songs in A Minor and The Diary of Alicia Keys; while they make a nice complement to the poems, the words feel a bit flat without the blaxploitation beat of "Heartburn," say, or the impassioned vocal delivery of "Fallin.' Adult/High School-Keys has sold millions of copies of her CDs and has won multiple Grammy Awards. Here, she shares the lyrics from these discs, as well as a collection of poems from her journals and notebooks. After several of the poems, she offers readers glimpses of her mindset and inspiration for her writings. Sadly, these poems read like what they are-journal entries from a young woman-and they don't have great insight or clever wordplay. (There's no "moon/June" here, but there is "cry/die" and "cry/goodbye" and "cry/fly.") Even her song lyrics, so powerful when accompanied with lush piano arrangements, come across as banal when unadorned with instrumentation. However, both their creator and their subject matter will give these simple selections immense appeal with a teen audience. The writer talks about insecurities, personal growth, loneliness, and love-good, bad, long-distance, and unrequited. These topics are the stuff of creative writing projects. Alicia Keys is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of her generation, having won five Grammy Awards (including Best New Artist), two American Music Awards, one MTV Video Music Award, four Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Awards, and two Soul Train Awards. The daughter of a single mother, at age four she began the intensive Suzuki method of classical piano study. She is a graduate of the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City and at sixteen was valedictorian of her senior class. She lives in New York City.

    Amazing

    This book is so amazing and so inspiring that not only has she inspired me to start writing poetry, it has inspired me to read more poetry as well. An amazing and excellent book, thanks for letting us into your thoughts Alicia.

    Very Introspective

    Alicia's poetry is absolutely amazing. I'm glad she thought twice and decided to put this book out, it definitely holds a lot of feelings, emotions and thoughts that needed to be heard. It's personal, but easy to relate to she speaks to her fans as well as herself. I hope there's more on the way, I'm sure it can only get better. Thanks so much for sharing it with us Alicia! An excellent book.

    intense emotions

    i very much enjoyed this collection of lyrics and poems. they were so emotionally driven it's impossible not to take something valuable away from the words. i highly recommend this read, just keep your heart and mind open.

    it was good

    this book is great for all alicia keys fans. it gives the reader a sneak peek into her thoughts and life experiences on a deep and personal level. she writes about being in love, being depressed, and even being unsure of her own worth. i would have really liked to see some more poetry from her though, she keeps you wanting more and has even inspired me to begin writing poetry again. it's a good read.

    Astonishing

    During the whole book...i felt connected to her...like she was speaking to me. If i meet her in real life i might cry cuz it would be like looking in a mirror of thoughts. The book was breathtaking!

    ***AWESOME****

    This book is a must read for anyone. If your depressed or even if your happy read this wonderful book that will have you rethinking everything. Some of her poems were meant for something else but made me reflect on a different subject. Definetly a must read!

    The True Diary

    I love this book from cover to cover!! From the way this has been written, you can tell the poems Alicia writes come from the heart. After some of the poems, there are reasons why she came to write it, what inspired her and how she put it to paper. About half way through the book, there are the lyrics for both of her albums (Songs In A Minor, and The Diary of Alicia Keys).

    The Greatest Emotions Ever

    This book is one of those books that will save yoyr life even though you may not need it in your life. It is wonderful. Everyone should have this book in there collection.

    i know what she feels

    hay this is a seventeen year old female and i can relate on what she is feeling because i been through alot of bad memories that hurt me really bad and i think we can be stronge and independet loving honest and respect how others feel. i would love to have her book because i love her some much, she and i are the only real good people in this little world. love always Stina

    I Like Her Poetry

    Her poetry really helped kinda find myself in a way and lead me to the poetry inside of me to have it be ok with my poetry.A mirror image of feelings that i was not the only one having.I really liked this book.

    Uplifting And Inspiring

    This book gives me a reason to go on. Sometimes when I feel that life isn't worth living, I will read this book and I know that Alicia has been through or can relate to what I'm going through. I feel that I'm not alone and that other people have hard and good times like me. Thank you Alicia

    Uplifting Book

    Alicia Keys's poetry and lyrics are very uplifting. It really maked you think about situtions that are happening in the world today. I just love this book. Everyone should read it.

    Extremely Gifted

    Alicia Keys was blessed with wisdom far beyond her years. In this book, she expresses her feelings on a range of topics such as love, socialism and despair on her quest for knowledge and understanding. Tears for Water is a wonderful, extremely well written book. Bravo Miss Keys, on a job well done!

    Alicia Keys is the 10th muse

    I commend Alicia Keys for revealing her life-story to the world. I loved every word, every emotion, everything that it made me feel. It was something that I could really relate too as a poet myself. However, I wish more people would write as realisticly as she does.........Alicia Keys you are the 10th muse

    A great book to read

    Alicia Keys words are wonderful. Her poems are very deep and heartfelt. I specially love her poem 'Unfulfilled Keys'. I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read poems.

    Alicia continues to AMAZE me!!

    I'm a huge Alicia fan! So I support everything she does. But I can't even begin to fathom what she was going through when she wrote these poems. I can only wonder and imagine. These poems are so deep, and intimate. Her writing style makes me feel not for her, but with her. The explanation behind Tears For Water is just so deep, and is so understandable for methods of survival. To have thoughts, joys, pains and sufferings stem from your tears to give you nourishment...I agree with you Alicia when you say that you don't mind drinking your tears for water. This book is AWESOME!!

    Wow

    I am totally shocked by this book. I can totally relate to Alicia's words. She has a way with them and this book takes you inside of her thoughts as well as your own. I can't wait for more to come in the future. I'm very proud that Alicia had the courage to put her feelings and poetry out there for us to read and I appreciate her for it.
