This well-received book, now in its fifth edition, is unique in providing a detailed examination of the technological basis of radiation therapy. Another unique feature is that the chapters are jointly written by North American and European authors. This considerably broadens the book’s contents and increases its applicability in daily practice throughout the world. The book is divided into two sections. The first section covers basic concepts in treatment planning and explains the various approaches to radiation therapy, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, tomotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and high and low dose rate brachytherapy. The second discusses in depth the practical clinical applications of the different radiation therapy techniques in a wide range of cancer sites. All chapters have been written by leaders in the field. This book will serve to instruct and acquaint teachers, students, and practitioners with the basic technological factors and approaches in radiation therapy.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nate Bittner, MD (University of Washington Medical Center)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a practical textbook that aims to bridge the gap between emerging technologies and clinical practice in radiation therapy.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to present appropriate treatment methodologies and auxiliary technologies, and how these can be used to achieve the best clinical outcomes. These are worthy objectives. Many radiation oncology textbooks gloss over crucial technological details which are imperative for a full understanding of the treatment planning process. The authors successfully meet their stated objectives.
Audience: This book is written for radiation oncology residents and practitioners.
Features: The first of the book's two parts focuses primarily on the more technical aspects of radiation therapy, including radiobiology, physics, dosimetry, and brachytherapy, among others. The second part focuses on the clinical applications of technology in radiation oncology. Specifically, chapters are divided into different anatomical sites with particular attention to dosimetry and field design. The illustrations are of high quality and reinforce the text.
Assessment: This excellent book is highly recommended for radiation oncology residents and practitioners. In particular, it focuses on many of the finer technical details of treatment which are often neglected in the standard radiation oncology reference books. Although the book is highly technical, it is concise and readable, making it an excellent reference.
