Editorial Reviews

Extracorporeal circulation with an artificial heart-lung machine has established itself as the routine adjunct to intracardiac and vascular surgery. Like the first and second editions (1976 and 1982), the third summarizes the fundamentals as well as technical problems and recent advances. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
From The Critics
Reviewer: Omid Hajiseyed Javadi, M.D. M.Sc.(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a book discussing the history, evolution, and current advances in extracorporeal circulation. Each chapter includes a section highlighting the key points of a topic, a brief history, and introduction and ends with a summary section, references, and suggested topics for additional reading. Numerous illustrations and tables in each chapter make the information easier to review and access.
Purpose: The book is intended to give a comprehensive overview of extracorporeal circulation. With the increasing complexity of patient comorbidities and new advances in the technique of extracorporeal perfusion, the authors have made an excellent contribution by accumulating a large body of data and presenting it in a clear and easy to read fashion.
Audience: Those who work in the field of perfusion and cardiovascular medicine are the intended audience. It is easy to understand for the student but residents and practitioners in cardiovascular surgery are the intended audience. The authors are credible and use numerous references to add depth to their statements.
Features: "The book starts with the history and progression of techniques in extracorporeal circulation. It then delves into current methods, controversies, and what is on the horizon. In its scope, the book discusses a variety of topics such as side effects of extracorporeal circulation clinically and on the molecular level, anesthesia for the technique, transfusion requirements to off pump bypass, and education of perfusionists. The illustrations are clear, the tables summarize well an impressive amount of data, and the references are up-to-date. The book omits discussion of some of the less mainstream topics for the sake of clarity. Some of the topics are partially discussed in different chapters, making the information less readily accessible.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for those interested in learning about extracorporeal circulation. It is easy to read and broad in scope. The advances in techniques and the surfacing of new controversies make it useful to have a new edition, complete with recent references and updates.
