From The CriticsReviewer: Aaron M. McBride, MPT, ATC (HealthSouth Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center)
Description: This book is a overview of all aspects of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. It contains descriptions and illustrations of physiological changes that occur with injury, tools and ideas regarding rehabilitation of these injuries, and specific rehabilitation techniques for specific joints.
Purpose: It is designed to assist herapists and provide them with a comprehensive guide for designing, implementing and supervising rehabilitation programs for patients with any musculoskeletal injury. These are worthy objectives as insurance requirements continue to decrease therapist visit numbers for patients. As time constraints required by insurance regulations limit participation, the visits that are approved must be as beneficial as possible.
Audience: This book is written for the student physical therapist looking for a more in-depth text on theory and practical application of musculoskeletal rehabilitation techniques. It is also designed for the improving physical therapist who wishes to integrate practical application of theory into the clinical setting. Certainly with their clinical backgrounds, the authors illustrate well this bridging of theory and integration.
Features: The book is filled with descriptions, illustrations, flow charts, and photos of exercises for specific joint rehabilitation. It does a nice job addressing the popular concept of "Core Stabilization." There are no color illustrations, but that does not detract from the improtance of the text or the information it presents.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent choice for the student or practicing physical therapist. The text rivals and certainly outpaces Prentice's earlier text, Rehabilitation Techniques in Sports Medicine (McGraw-Hill, 1999). This book offers better illustrations and descriptions, and is simply a superior text. This is a must-have for students having difficulty with exercise prescription.
