Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Simple Science" series, this book offers a survey of machines that use electronics. Bailey offers a good description of a fax machine. "Inside a fax is a device that is light sensitive. That means it can tell how much light is coming off something, such as a sheet of paper. If there is an image on the paper, the device will see the light and dark areas on it. The different amounts of light are then changed to an electronic code. The code can be sent to another fax machine." While most of the rest of the machines cannot be explained so compactly, Bailey offers a working definition for each machine discussed. The result is the best book of the series. Like the other books in this series, the illustrations are cartoon characters plus photos. The illustrations are mostly adequate and appropriate, unlike other parts of the series. Unfortunately, almost all of the cartoon scientists and engineers are white men. Women are shown ironing and microwaving dinner. Like the rest of the series, this book is not recommended. Back matter includes a quiz, glossary, and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
