Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Who said learning addition must be void of fun? Obviously, they never tried teddy bear addition! With this picture book, a part of the “McGrath Math” series, primary age students will enjoy learning to count with tiny teddies. Written in playful rhyme, the text is fun to read aloud and makes the addition concepts that are taught easy to memorize. Addition problems are provided on almost every page, represented both with pictures and number sentences; the solutions are also provided. Teachers and parents might purchase a bag of gummy bears, so that children can complete these addition activities on their own. The colorful illustrations and minimal text make this book user friendly and engaging for primary age students. The illustrations also provide excellent visuals for the concepts taught in the text. Children will learn about guesstimating, sorting, vertical and horizontal equations, and place values, along with much more. The final page provides an excellent review of all the addition facts taught, while the second to the last page briefly introduces the concept of subtraction. Overall, this book is an excellent resource for primary and early elementary teachers or homeschoolers. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson; Ages 4 to 8.
