Teddy Bear Patterns

Overview

The teddy bears are back—this time to teach readers all about patterns. Similar to the first three books in the McGrath Math series of concept books, TEDDY BEAR PATTERNS uses rhyming verse to explain the concepts illustrated by the colorful teddies. This simple text helps children to follow along as the teddy bears sort by color, and arrange into patterns of two colors, three colors, and so on. Readers will also discover how they can use patterns to skip count, add, and even multiply, before trying their hand at creating a pattern of their own.

TEDDY BEAR PATTERNS is a worthwhile addition to the classroom, especially those that already use bear counters or other manipulatives as learning tools. Back matter provides a summary of the concepts introduced in the book.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Small, jelly bean-like bears in six colors introduce basic math concepts. They are first sorted into groups by colors: red, yellow, purple, orange, green, and blue. Then they form two-color pairs (red and yellow) to make a pattern. Adding bears of other colors continues with creating more complicated patterns until all six colors appear in a line. Adding two patterns of six bears each produces a total of twelve bears. When three rows appear, one page shows 6+6+6=18 and the next page clarifies 6x3=18. Two bears each in six sets demonstrate counting to twelve by twos. The notion of odd and even numbers is shown with alternating lines. Several pages present bears in different configurations and invite readers to discover patterns. The last page provides a concise review of Sorting by Color, Color Patterns, Skip-Counting Odd and Even Numbers, and Identifying Patterns. The rhyming text and brightly colored bears will appeal to young children. Part of the "McGrath Math" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
