Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-K-- Another bear story from Degen that tries--but fails--to pay tribute to a child's imagination and the ways in which it can be employed to deal with problems. An unnamed boy tells how he is ``king'' of the Teddy Bear Towers (a kind of castle/island) and as such rules over all he sees, including a baby--presumably a new sibling--who floats to his drawbridge in a basket. Unhappy at the appearance of this child, the boy pushes the basket back out to sea and tells his teddy bear army (bearing maces and swords) to guard the castle. The baby gets in anyway, aided by the sea bear (a Neptune-like parental figure); when he knocks over some blocks, the king forces him to walk the plank. After a plunge into the sea, the baby is again rescued by the sea bear, who tells the king that he has to share. But when the sea bear tries to enforce his law, the baby suddenly--inexplicably--turns on him and comes to the king's defense. This didactic, tiresome, obvious story portrays a selfish bully being outwitted by a baby who, for unknown reasons, wants to be with him. Illustrated in Degen's recognizable style, the pictures have a disconcerting mix of teddy bears and sea life that fail as resoundingly as the text. All in all, a book to avoid. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY
