Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Illustrator Michael Hague, who is known for such stellar works as The Velveteen Rabbit and The Wizard of Oz, turns his eye and his pen toward a longtime classic in Teddy Bears' Mother Goose. By tapping into such timeless favorites as "Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater," "Jack and Jill," "Little Tommy Tucker," "Jack Sprat," and "Little Miss Muffet," Hague brings a classic collection of whimsical rhymes and verses to life in a world populated by colorful, cuddly teddy bears. There are other critters who put in an appearance, too, including pigs, monkeys, dogs, cats, and a crooked little mouse.

Hague's exquisite drawings are a visual smorgasbord of color, texture, and personality, and his attention to detail makes the pages worthy of diligent study. With more than 30 nursery rhymes and both a table of contents and a first-line index, youngsters will be able to track down their favorites with ease. That, combined with Hague's pictorial feast, will make these timeless tales a household staple capable of providing hours of entertainment for generations of children to come. (Beth Amos)

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The bears in Michael Hague's The Teddy Bears' Picnic are back for Teddy Bears' Mother Goose. Some of the rhymes are changed accordingly, as in "Hush-a-bye, teddy..." and "There was an old bear who lived in a shoe...," and Hague draws most of the bears as children. ( Apr.) Children's Literature
Hague has selected 56 favorite Mother Goose rhymes and has modified the text of many to include a bear as the "protagonist." For those who are purists in their remembrance of the traditional rhymes, the changes in wording have, in many cases, changed the humor of the rhymes. For those rhymes whose text is unchanged, the inclusion of a bear in the illustrations is acceptable. It is obvious that Hague is first and foremost an artist. His delightful illustrations are the appealing attraction to the book. The bears' facial expressions are engaging and will delight young children. Some rhymes have full-page illustrations while others have only half-page. The inclusion of an index to first lines of the rhymes is a good addition to the book. The book is more appropriate for young children and would be a nice addition to an already solid collection of Mother Goose rhymes. 2001, Henry Holt, . Ages 2 to 5. Reviewer: J. B. Petty
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Hague has selected 55 nursery rhymes and slightly reworked some of them to fit the theme: "Rub-a-dub-dub,/Three bears in a tub." There is an old bear who lives in a shoe, Little Bear Blue blows his horn, and a little crooked bear walks a crooked mile. Even when the words remain untouched, all of the illustrations depict bear protagonists. The artwork, executed in ink, watercolor, and pencil, consists of large renderings of captivating teddies engaged in a variety of mostly humorous antics. Most of the illustrations are full page and well suited to group viewing.-Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community College, CT Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
