On your mark, get ready, cook! From breakfast to dessert, the more than fifty recipes in this well-organized and visually attractive cookbook should appeal to beginning chefs of all ages. Featured food groups include snacks, soups, salads, sandwiches, side dishes, and entrees. "Pizza Coast to Coast" may prove to be the intended audience's favorite chapter. The author emphasizes fresh ingredients, good nutrition, and enjoyable and prudent food preparation. Food safety tips are included at the beginning of the book and throughout in the beneficial "Chef's Tips" sidebars. Some of the recipes may prove challenging but should be well worth the effort. By following these step-by-step instructions teens will gain confidence in the kitchen, learn culinary skills, and eat healthier. Note: This reviewer tried out the Not-an-Ordinary Grilled Cheese Sandwich recipe and can highly recommend it. Each recipe includes a conversational introduction, a list of ingredients, clear directions, and eye-popping photographs of the fully prepared dish. (While the recipes are made with fresh and healthy foods, it should be noted that nutritional value and calorie count information is not included.) The appendix consists of an annotated list of uncommon ingredients, a metric conversion chart, and an illustrated list of kitchen equipment and utensils. The index is concise and helpful. Appetite-inspiring photographs give this recipe book for teens the visual push to get kids into the kitchen and cooking. Following a brief encouraging introduction on using organic and local foods plus knife and kitchen safety, the remainder of the book, divided into nine sections, features luscious recipes that should appeal to teen palates. Beginning with Brilliant Breakfasts, the nine chapters include Snacks and Co-Stars, Celebrity Soups, Star-Studded Salad and Dressings, Sandwich and Burger Show Stoppers, Pizza Coast to Coast, Side Shows, Shooting Star Entrees, and Red Carpet Desserts. Each recipe lists ingredients and directions for cooking divided into: On Your Mark, Get Set and Cook! Most recipes include a full page color photo of the results and some include a small photo of the preparation. The variety of foods is appealing to teens and include lots of finger foods while being lower in fat and high in fresh ingredients. The only thing missing is photos of teens themselves in the cooking process as a nudge to get them going. A glossary of healthful foods plus a metric conversion chart, an illustrated kitchen utensil and equipment section and an index are included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.

Gr 8 Up—With an emphasis on fresh, healthy, and made-from-scratch dishes, this title offers up a wide array of recipes from breakfast to dessert and everything in between, illustrated with fantastic photography. The recipes are all formatted in steps titled "On your mark…Get set…Cook!" The chapter headings are all show-business related—"Star-studded Salads and Dressings," "Red Carpet Desserts"—but it isn't clear why. Also, several recipes call for other recipes to be made first: the hummus calls for "sesame sauce" that is featured on another page and the mashed potatoes call for roasted garlic butter, which also appears on another page. Most teens don't want a three-page recipe for burgers. Better choices include Rozanne Gold's Eat Fresh Food: Awesome Recipes for Teen Chefs (Bloomsbury, 2009) and Megan, Jill & Judi Carle's Teens Cook: How to Cook What You Want to Eat (Ten Speed, 2004).—Genevieve Gallagher, Charlottesville High School, VA

MATTHEW LOCRICCHIO was born into a restaurant and catering family and has worked in the food industry most of his life. Included in his resume as a professional cook are stints art the well-known Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the West Coast Stock Exchange's private club in San Francisco. and the legendary Barbay Coast restaurant.

Matthew has taught culinary classes and given cooking demonstrations at culinary schools throughout the country as well as the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

JAMES PETERSON, the renowned cookbook author and photographer, is a James Beard and International Association of Culinary Professionals award winner.

For beginning cooks and seasoned chefs, its step-by-step instructions feature fresh, nutritious ingredients and show-stopping dishes made from scratch.

    What Stephanie Thought: When it comes to food, most of my experiences go like this:
    Somebody: Hey Stephanie, you like to eat, right? Are you good at cooking?
    Me: No, no. I can't be good in every room of the house!
    But seriously. Considering I'm the kind of person who could burn a caesar salad, most people would not come to me first (or at all) for food catering needs. Which is why when I saw this cookbook that clearly states it is for neophytes, I knew it was perfect for me.

    Many of the recipes featured in Teen Cuisine are indeed a very innovative way to get kids to enjoy their time in the kitchen. The four recipes I tried out (California-style pizza, Alabama Festival Shrimp, Po-Boy Sandwich, and Slow Cakes) ended up fantastic: easy-to-follow, orderly, and most importantly, tasty.

    I wish the recipe instructions would have had more pictures. For a beginner's cookbook, this one isn't as effortless as it leads on to. I would have loved progressive images to keep track of where I was while cooking, sort of like in origami or other craft books.

    Also, easy cooking does not necessarily mean healthy cooking. Though a lot of the recipes call for "whole-grain" and "fresh" ingredients, it is evident by the foods themselves, such as the Max Mac and Cheese and Chicago-style Deep Dish Pizza, that these are not exactly heart-healthy selections. I'll admit I'm sort of a nut about these kinds of things. The recipes are super, yes, and even better, simple, but if you closely watch what you eat, Teen Cuisine's greasy choices may not be ideal for you.
