School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up Brown explains the process of childbirth using as examples three couples who chose a hospital, alternate birthing center, and home birth. She discusses the different types of prepared childbirth classes; the body changes; and what to expect during labor, delivery, and immediate aftercare in a normal childbirth. Color photographs show the couples in class and in the hospital and the baby immediately after birth. After a explanation of how pregnancy occurs, Nourse presents a comprehensive discussion of how birth control devices work, how to use them, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and how to purchase them. Photographs of the devices and instructive diagrams are in color. These two attractive books, written in a no-nonsense, easy-to-read style with labeled diagrams and indexes, expand the information given in The New Teenage Body Book (Price/Stern/Sloan, 1987) by McCoy and Wibbelsman and will help to ease the fear and to take the mystery out of birth control and childbirth.
