Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
This cautionary tale, provided through data, gives helpful information to teens in this situation. The text deals with the reality of being teen parents, issues of teen mothers and fathers, and the child's needs. Related questions are asked at the end of each section. Definitions of terms are found on red backgrounds. News articles with gray background, throughout the text relate various issues of teen pregnancy such as sexually permissive attitudes, welfare, and "How Much Does it Cost to Have a Baby?" Articles with green background give information to help teens in this situation such as "Questions to Ask If You Find Out You're Pregnant," "Teen Parents Have Rights," and "Teen Father's Rights." Colored photographs and graphs add to the text. Lists of books and websites for more information, a bibliography, and an index are included. This is one of "The Changing Face of Modern Families" series. Gallup supplied the data. Being a teenage parent is not an easy course but can cause one to grow to meet the challenge. Difficult as it is for the parents, the children are those most affected. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

Gr 6 Up—The titles in this informative, nonjudgmental series examine many dimensions of the family unit. Including color photos, plentiful sidebars, and interesting headline stories, the accessible texts present real-life experiences and numerous supporting facts, definitions, graphs, charts, and statistics. Gay and Lesbian Parents addresses the controversy and intolerance faced by same-sex parents and how children in these families meet their unique situations. Teen Parents presents the reality of raising a child while continuing school and/or working, while other titles look at the challenges of raising foster children, living on the streets or in a shelter without a real home, and facing prejudices or mixing cultures in a multiracial home. Within each chapter, "What Do You Think?" questions encourage readers to consider the information presented. Multiracial Families concludes with a helpful word list to familiarize readers with appropriate words to use, and Teen Parents ends with an eye-opening list of costs involved with having a baby.—Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE
