Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-This anthology of current opinion probes the complex problem in the United States, which leads all of the industrialized nations in the rate of births to teens. The text is divided into three sections that address the extent and severity of the problem, contributing factors, and prevention. Selections embody educational, social, and punitive approaches. Among the issues treated are the effects on society of long-term welfare dependency, links between early childbearing and poverty, widespread acceptance of premarital sex, cohabitation, single motherhood, and the efficacy of sex-education programs. Selections that offer positive assessments of single motherhood and those that call for measures against exploitation of female teens by older men are also included. Views of advocacy and support organizations are represented. Some organizational contributions are not well written; they read like press releases. While the book will be useful for reports, several entries express similar arguments and are repetitious.-Libby K. White, Jewish Vocational Services, Baltimore, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Teen Pregnancy and Parenting by Helen Cothran was a very hard book to read because it repeated itself a lot and never really gave the readers any clear answers to any questions they could possibly have. I was disappointed in the stories that the teen moms shared because there was no detail and it skipped around a lot. Also there was no mention of the fathers in this book at all which surprised me the most. It would of been nice to know what percent of teen dads do stick around to help raise the baby. This book only focused on the negative side of parenting and gave no positive side to it at all, so now if a pregnant teen reads this book all they are going to think about is the negatives and not get to think or hear about some of the positives that can come from being a teen mom.

I'm a senior in Arvada,CO and for my english class we are doing an ethnogarphy and my group and I choose to do teen moms and what there plans for the future are. This book definetly did not help me out what so ever because this book mainly focused on abortion and if teen pregnancy is a growing problem in our country. The one thing that did stick out to me is everything teen moms have to give up in order to provide a good life for there baby.
