Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This first book in an intended series of four inspirational poetry compilations for teens (Teen Sunshine Reflections) offers more than one hundred interfaith poems, prayers, and proverbs to comfort, motivate, and encourage today's young adult generation. Poems by teenagers are interspersed with writings from such notables as Buddha, Mother Teresa, Sitting Bull, Mahatma Gandhi, Anne Frank, and Mark Twain. Organized thematically, the selections address real-life topics relevant to the adolescent experience, including relationships, individuality, and tolerance, as well as subjects with strong emotional appeal, such as love, forgiveness, and spirituality. The result is a balanced collection that successfully fulfills Cotner's intent to harness the talents and positive energy of contemporary teens, while simultaneously inspiring them to "recognize how truly special" they are. Exceptional poems, such as Shel Silverstein's classic "The Voice" and teen poet Nadia Kourehdar's "I Wonder," provide opportunities for profound introspection and encourage independent thinking. Kourehdar's "Dustin's Time" and eighteen-year-old Kyle Sandburg's reflection on tolerance deliver honest, unfeigned wisdom on the responsibility of choice. Marred only by the inclusion of a few unsophisticated selections, Cotner's work promises to appeal to teen writers experimenting with their own poetic voices and to young adult devotees of the Chicken Soup and Taste Berries inspirational series. Because of the manifest religious nature of most of its contents, however, this anthology might be inappropriate for some public school library collections. Thoughtful perusal before purchase is recommended as a preemptive measure topossible challenges. Index. Photos. Source Notes. School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-An anthology of more than 150 short poems and quotations about spiritual issues. Cotner chooses well, mixing the work of well-known figures (Helen Keller, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther, Saint Francis, Anne Frank) with the thoughtful expressions of young people, including 30 different writers in all. This is an interfaith collection, though never too watered-down to be meaningless. The cover design and page layout are inviting, and the selections draw readers in for more. This is a fine choice for students seeking more than "Chicken Soup" (Health Communications), and a good recommendation for those who want prose and poetry less than a page long. Couple this title with Colin Greer and Herbert Kohl's anthology, A Call to Character (Perennial, 1997), for teens seeking inspirational reading.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Friends

God bless the friends
Who grace my life.

The ones who are bedrock,
Solid and steadfast,
And there forever.

The ones who are skyrockets,
Flashing suddenly into my life,
Bright and exciting,
But quickly gone.

The ones who are butterflies,
Soft and quiet,
Who enchant me briefly
And then fly on,
Leaving me with
A fond smile and
A heart full of memories.
Thank God for friends.
